Does anyone know whether this can be done for a private party sale? Considering buying a car here for a relative out of state - car would be immediately driven to that state, registered in that state. I would insure it for the drive. Obviously, I want to avoid having to pay sales tax in CT, and then again in the new state. Also just want an inexpensive short registration. I see something on the DMV website about a short registration in order to get a car inspected, but nothing regarding a temporary tag just to drive a newly purchased car out of state to its new home.

I think you are looking for an In-Transit Registration.

DMV_ In-Transit Registrations

Other options might be, loading it on a trailer and towing it out of state. Then you would only need to have registration and insurance on the trailer. Another possibility, maybe you can get it registered in the other state before you transport it. Maybe you can get a temporary registration in that state. That would depend on the laws of that state.

Thank you, this was exactly the information I needed. Trailering and towing not an option - this is an inexpensive car, not worth doing that. And I will also look into getting it registered and insured under the relative, and him mailing us the plates, and changing the plates over to the new state plates before the trip.
