Default connecticut nice quaint small towns

I will be traveling through CT in a few weeks and would greatly appreciate any advice concerning small, quaint, charming towns that I can visit. I am interested in small towns with historic districts in the downtown, nice shops, old architecture, high quality. Mystic and Old Lyme have been recommended to me, but am willing to travel anywhere in the state. Thank you so much.

Places that come to mind are Essex, Chester and East Haddam. East haddam has the wonderful Goodspeed Opera House for great plays and the beautiful Gillette's Castle. Also nice along the coast is Old Saybrook. In the hills, Litchfield is beautiful. There is a great town green there with stunning New England architecture. Jay

Simsbury has a great downtown district with a number of old homes located around the town. The Simsbury 1820 House and the Pettibone Tavern are two older properties situated right on Route 10.
