My son is graduating from college and starting a new job at Sikorsky in Stratford CT. We need to find an apartment complex for him to live in that is safe, yet not too far from Sikorsky. What towns and/or apartment buildings do you recommend for someone in early to mid twenties? Looking for safe and fun areas with things to do where he might meet some young adults.

I would recommend Milford. Great safe town with lots to do and a wide range of apartments. Plus it is not far from the nightlife in New Haven. I think he would like it there. Jay

I agree Milford would be good. Depending on the weight you give to the priority of meeting other 20-somethings, also consider the East Rock neighborhood in New Haven. There is a very high concentration of graduate and professional students and postdoctoral fellows at Yale living in that area. It is safe relative to the rest of New Haven and some of the streets are quite beautiful as well.

There’s plenty of options. Milford is probably the best bet, specifically downtown. Two people I know (aged 28 and 31) both work at Sikorsky and live in Norwalk and Fairfield. They like the nightlife in Norwalk and feel there is more to do. I don’t agree or disagree - but the friend in Norwalk did say he hits no traffic commuting to Stratford.

What’s the price range? And what do you expect to get in that range?

We anticipate $1800-2000 for 1 bedroom apartment. I spoke with a realtor up there as well. She also said Milford or certain parts of New Haven. Thanks for input. Any particular apartment complexes we should check out....or stay away from?

Someone else mentioned the East Rock area as well. Any particular complexes that are better than others?

Most of the properties within 2 blocks east or west of Whitney Ave are decent, but I don't know them all. I am referring to the area north of Humphrey St and South of East Rock Park Rd. With a commute to Stratford, the availability of parking (preferably off-street, assigned) will probably help you to eliminate some choices.

From what I have heard, rentals go quickly in this area. So if something has been open for a long time, you may want to find out why.

Just be very picky with New Haven neighborhoods.

Spinnaker and Metro Star are a few larger apartment groups in Milford. The latter also has some nice complexes in New Haven. New construction in New Haven tends to be high rent, but you can check out Corsair, Novella, College & Crown, The Union, 360 State, and the upcoming Audubon. There are smaller new complexes too, not sure of the names by memory.

There's a lot of older apartment buildings in New Haven too. Google/Zillow/Hot Pads to find them. I would stick to Downtown, Wooster Square, and East Rock/Upper State Street mainly.
