It sounds like you had a unpleasant experience in California, and are homesick for Connecticut. Welcome back!

Question Any info on Blue Hills?

Hello..I recently moved here from NYC in search of affordable housing. A friend of mine found us a rental in Hartford (South End?) and I have to say..it's nothing to shout about. People speed, they don't yeild to pedestrians, and there appears to be a great deal of slum lords. lI'm a school teacher (on maternity leave) as well as a mother of five..so I'm looking for a SAFE, AFFORDABLE, neighborhood, with DECENT (if not great) schools. My realtor suggested Blue Hills....any thoughts about this? Can anyone recommend a neighborhood that meets the above with home prices below 250k? Thanks so much

MissingNYC - You might consider one of the nearby suburbs like Bloomfield, Windsor or Wethersfield. The schools in Hartford have issues and being a teacher with 5 kids I would put schools as a top priority. JMHO, Jay

The Hartford area, both east and west of the CT river- and both north and south of Hartford have many towns that are easily affordable for you.

Jays advice is right on the money as well.

I'm gonna go ahead and venture that you had some type of pre-conceived notion or expection of what California living was like prior to moving there. By the way, even within California, the life is very different depending on the region - Northern California, Central Coast, and Southern California.

If you were expecting any part of California to be like your home town, then you were setting yourself up for disappointment from the start.

It sounds like you really like your hometown. If so, then that's where you should stay, as there is no other place like that.

In terms of individuals who talk down to others, because they supposedly live in the oh so "enlightened" region of New England. It's definitely Massachusetts. The rudest people I have ever come in contact with. Connecticut is bad, too, relatively speaking.

As long as you're away from New York City, residents of New York state aren't bad. People from New Jersey seem okay, too. Californians will talk down about other states, particularly the south, but on a personal level, most are friendly.

Most arrogant (on your list)
1. Massachusetts
2. Connecticut
3. New York
4. California
5. New Jersey
Least Arrogant

No matter where you go it's up to you to make the best of it.
Consider may post here of the rudess and arrogance of people from Connecticut over California, so it's all perspective my friend.

I moved to New Haven from Orange County, CA last year (lived in CA all my life). I think the rudeness level is about equal! lol.

Default Calif. v. CT People

In response to Vinman's comments, It would appear Vinman has not had a positive experience living in Calif., and for the most part, I would concur with his sentiments. California can be daunting, especially arriving from CT, with 3.5 million population, to a state with approximately 37.5 million (2007 estimate). I moved to Northern Calif. (San Francisco Bay area) from Windsor, CT (Hartford area) and it is definitely a culture shock, to say the least, especially regarding the people in CA vs. CT and New England.

People in CA, for the most part, tend to be very superficial and shallow. They are very much from the school of me-me-me, and to blazes with you! CA is the embodiment of a hedonistic and narcissistic society, where people are so keen to keep-up wth the Jones', and measure other people, not by their character, but by what vehicle they are driving, or the $150.00 designer jeans you're wearing! The almighty dollar in CA is God, and they use the dollar sign as a measure of the individual. They are friendly, but for the most part it's a facade.

Vinman made the comment about how he had found people in CT to be more genuine and compassionate. He has hit the nail on the head when it comes to people in CT, or from the Northeast, for that matter. New Englander's may appear to be a bit stand-offish at first when you meet them, but what you find is that once they get to know you -and you are genuine in character-you have a friend, not an acquaintance, or fair-weather friend as you find in CA folks! Since living out here, I always remember this statement quite frequently: 'In CA it's easy to have a lot of acquaintance's, but true friends are hard to come by!'

There is one statement that I'll always remember as long as I live in CA, and I believe succinctly sums-up the Golden State. I hadn't been living in CA very long when I met a gent from NY (Brooklyn). We were comparing notes on the people in CA vs. the Northeast. After we had finished discussing-and agreeing on our 'laundry list' of items about the 'right coast' vs. CA, - (one of which is the lack of genuine friendliness on the part of Californians') - he turned to me and said 'I've found the unfriendliness to be an inherent part of the state's landscape, and I know why the people act the way they do here' I asked him what he had found in this vast cultural wasteland. He stated: 'You know what? California is a lonely mans' paradise!" A truer statement one could never make about the mass of humanity they call California!!!

Footnote: The above comments/impressions are based on living out-here since 1974, having travelled through-out the Golden State, trying to find-out what makes these people tick, least someone get's the impression that I've just stepped off the Greyhound bus and am homesick! (I may live in California, but my home is Connecticut!)

Interesting statement he made. Care to elaborate a bit on it, ie comparing a few states' friendliness (or lack of) with their landscape?
