Oh yeah I forgot to ask.... We are taking the whole family up to Hartford the first weekend in May. Our 16 year old boy is very hesitant to endorse a move (totally understandable) can anyone give me some ideas of things I could do with him that will really let him see the good things about moving there? We will be the from Friday until Monday.

THANKS!!!!

You may want to go to a New Britain Rock Cats game, which is minor league baseball (AA). That is alway fun for a family.

Quote:
There is no major league sports here, and no imminent plans for any, but there is good minor-league baseball in New Britain and hockey in Hartford-both close to West Hartford.

I disagree with that. The Mayor of Hartford is advocating a return of the NHL or NBA. Hartford's largest landlord, Northland development know controls the Civic Center and the Rent and has made it public they want to bring a NHL or NBA to Hartford. Northland made a bid on the Penguins when they were for sale.

In the end Hartford won't get a new pro team until a new arena is built.

So, what are you disagreeing with? There are simply no imminent plans for major league sports here. No one is building an arena. There is really good minor-league sports here, why not focus on that? My kids just took in a RockCats game on Monday!

There are plans in the works to bring a team here. You have the largest land owner in Hartford actively pursing this option.

As for minor league sports, baseball is fine. But Hockey is a different story. Why go to a minor league hockey game when we had the Whalers? Whalers fans simply don't want to settle for the Wolfpack when we had the Whale for so many years. Minor league hockey is good for cities like Scranton, Manchester, or Bridgeport. Hartford deserves better.

Do you think people really care to go see teams like Providence, Wikes-Barre, Erie, when we use to see teams like Boston, New York, Colorado, Chicago ect...... There is a night and day difference.

O.K. you guys have been a wealth of information. Now I have another question. When I have family come to visit they are going to want to go to Manhatten. So, knowing that parking and driving there is a PITA is there a good mass transit option? Also what about a day at the beach? Is that possible? The same with Boston. Is there a way to get there without driving?

Also I wanted to comment on a wonderful place we ate dinner in d.t. Hartford while we were there. It was called "Dish" it was truly amazing food! Some of the best my husband and I have ever tasted!

Thanks again in advance for your imput!

Dish is amazing and there are many more like that in the city.

As for mass transportation, best option for NYC is drive to New Haven and take Metro North into the city. Right now there is no good option from Hartford to NYC by train, it is possible but not recommended. In a few years there should be a commuter train from Springfield to New Haven making it easier to do such a thing.

As for Boston, if you don't want to drive much you could always drive into Grafton, MA which is right off I-90 and take the T into Boston. Another option would be driving to the Greenline Riversize stop and taking the T from there. The second option is probably as quick as the first option.

Default Hartford

First off, I would tell your son that change is good and Connecticut is a beautiful state. Growing up here and traveling across the country I have realized that the friends that I have made in Connecticut are more loyal to me than any of the friends that I have met in any other state.

Second, I would tell him that Connecticut is a battleground state if he likes baseball. Seriously, at UCONN, I assume that the people that say hi and smile at me are Yankees fans and the people who stare at me are Red Sox fans. (this is because I wear a Yankee fitted everywhere I go). I don't know of any other state that is located between the best baseball teams in the world (lol).

The state's location is also vital for entertainment. As a CT teen, I remember some of my favorite passtimes catching the Metro North and spending whole summer days in New York City. There are endless things to do there.

Hope that I was helpful.
