where should a single mom/college professor live
Hello,
I'm moving to Stamford, CT from small town Missouri in August. I'm a single mom and would love to live in a neighborhood that has young families, near a very good, diverse elementary school and still affordable. I'll be starting as a faculty member at UConn, so it would be great if our home would be fairly close to the university. I'd like to buy a 2+bedroom condo that has a basement and is no more than $250,000. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much.

I assume you are moving to Stamford- to be employed at the UCONN Campus in that city.
Stamford is a very nice city, population about 120,000, located in Fairfield County in southwestern Connecticut on Long Island sound. It is less then an hour from New York City, about 45 minutes to New Haven, and about 1.5 hours from Hartford, the state capital. Median home price (single family home) Last quarter 2007 was $460,000.
Stamford is a great place to live-low crime rate, great shopping, excellent restaurants and a fun night life. However southwestern CT is one of the most expensive places in the USA to live.
A condo as you describe- 2 bedrooms, 1000 square feet would likely range from 350-450K and up.
You might consider areas 'up the coast' into New Haven county-Milford- where a condo as you describe could easily be had. Milford is commutable via metro north-about 40 minutes each direction.
Other suggestions; roughly halfway between Stamford & New Haven/Milford are parts of Norwalk & Stratford; A condo in these cities could be found at the price you suggest.
Commuting via I 95 or the Merritt Parkway can be brutal during rush hour, so the closer to Stamford, if driving by car, the easier it will be.

Sorry, you're not going to find anything of merit for less than 325,000(minimum). If it were me, and 250K was my budget, i'd decline the position.

You might find a condo for that price in Norwalk.

She might find it in Norwalk, but she said she wanted very good schools...and theirs aren't so great.

Danbury to Stamford is quite a haul. Not a commute I'd want to do everyday.

Yes many people make this commute daily. It will take about 50 minutes without traffic, but add 20-30 minutes on if you're traveling during rush hour. You can take 84w to 684s to 287e to 95n or route 7s to 95s.
Danbury, Shelton and Stratford are your best bets - if your schedule is flexible then it's a great idea. Outside of 6:30-9am and 4-6:30pm, your commute shouldn't be bad. Coming from Missouri you may have sticker shock - outside of the mentioned towns, it will be very expensive.

Some great info.
Actually Stamford is closer to NYC than New Haven - mileage wise. 35 miles vs 43 miles, depending on where you're going.
