I'm moving to Hartford from California in the near future. I'm looking for a neighorhood that is walkable, urban, and safe enough that it feels comfortable for someone with reasonable street smarts. It seems like downtown Hartford, the Hartford west end or West Hartford are the areas I'll probably be interested in, judging from what I've heard (but I'm open to other suggestions).

Two questions that have come up:
1) My favorite apartments in the past have been in pretty, older buildings. I find that they are quieter and the architecture tends to be more interesting than in newer places. I don't have a need for the extras, like dishwashers, fitness rooms, etc, that tend to drive up the price in brand new complexes. However, I'm trying to find listings online and having some trouble, since usually the big, new buildings get pulled up. Does anyone have recommendations? I am not interested in sharing a floor of a single family house, which seems to make up a lot of the Craigslist postings in the area, especially in West Hartford.

2) I've heard that downtown Hartford currently has no supermarket, but is trying to arrange for one. Does anyone know how this is going?

Thanks for any advice you have!

Hi ytlh

Hartford has long had some very pleasant older apartments- but until recently has never really exploited some of these gems. The west end of Hartford is your best bet for finding something pre world wars, but also some buildings built between the two WW's. The west end has long been artsy and the city's growing gay area. Also just over the town line into West Hartford there are some fantastic apartments from the early 20th century, also the 1930's of fine art deco design.

West Hartford center is a combination of a traditional New England center that is upscale, along the new 'Blueback' square' which seems to have successfully integrated the New' Town Center Concept' into the older parts of its center- it is all supremely walkable to nearby 'character apartments'. West Hartford center has fine eateries cafes and coffee shops (mostly non chain) art galleries, chi chi shops etc.

As for super markets there are two near the West Hartford/Hartford line- Shaw's and Stop & Shop. I have no idea if a new large chain supermarket will be downtown in the city-but I believe there is a rather upscale market on the grown floor level of the luxury 'Hartford 21' 36 story tower downtown.

Other towns to consider with older two families and 'character apartments' Wethersfield-- especially the historic old Main Street area. Manchester has the old Cheney Mills- textile factories that have been made into apartments in an historic area not far from the towns Main Street.

Craigs list is fine- but also try the Hartford Courant for rents Apartments and rentals in Connecticut. Information and classifieds from The Hartford Courant Classifieds on courant.com -- Courant.com

Lastly welcome --

As an update, we ended up renting an apartment that is part of the Clemens Place complex. The west end neighborhood seemed to be the closest in feel to what we were looking for. Thanks again for the advice!
