Default Granby and other horse friendly towns.

We are looking to move to an area that is horse friendly, a bit more open minded than Cheshire and within driving distance to Hartford. We're thinking of checking out Granby. Any other ideas or leads? Ideally we'd like a house in the low-mid $300s for 2 adults and possibly have our 2 horses with us or at a stable close by. My own preference is for a place that has: a sense of community, civic or environmental groups, a farmer's market, you get the idea. Any ideas are appreciated.

Bethany and Woodbury I believe have more horses per square mile than any other town in CT. I may be wrong, but this is what I've heard.

I'd pick Granby it's a wonderful town. Great schools, REALLY nice people, a nice community feel, and their are a lot of horse farms locally.
I'd say to go for it.

Many of the outlying suburbs of Hartford are horse-friendly. Granby is a wonderful choice. I am not sure you will get what you want there in your price range. There are several places to board horses. other towns to consider would be Burlington, Hebron, Marlborough, Ellington and Andover. Jay

Simsbury may still be horse friendly. Within a mile radius of my former home on Surrey Circle, there were at least four homes with horses. The people across the street had a paddock with two horses. My friend Nick's Uncle had a large property (two houses away from ours) with several horses stabled. My friend Yogi's parents have 7 acres and still have a barn and horses in back. And another family on Holcomb St. near Surrey Circle had a horse or two in their yard. Check with zoning to see if you can still have a paddock or stable in a suburban neighborhood. Larger properties like 5 plus acres are considered farms and you would not have a problem with a horse or two on a property of that size.

I live in Marlborough (20 minutes from downtown Hartford) and there are tons of horses in this town, both stables and private homeowners keeping a couple horses on their property.

Granby is a wonderful town. I grew up there and even owned a home there for a few years after I married. Super school system, nice community.
