Default Company listing by location?

Does anyone know of a resource where I can get a listing of companies in our state, broken out by location (and size, if possible)? I'm trying to target my job search to more locally-based companies (Fairfield and New Haven Counties preferred).

I relocated here about 6 months ago, and the economic climate and lack of a large enough personal/professional network in this area does not really allow for someone to start an IT consulting firm for small businesses. I feel that the big job boards are mostly a waste of time and most recruiters are recycling the same few jobs.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

One of the best sources for local company information is a database called "Reference USA." This database includes even the smallest home-based businesses, it is that comprehensive. Many public libraries in CT subscribe to this database; you will probably need your library card to access it remotely, but you can use it in the library without a library card.
