Milford, CT (Question from Europe)
Hi Everyone,
I am 22 years old from Sweden (Europe), I´m planning on moving permanently to Connecticut. I have seen pictures of a city called Milford. I think it´s absolutely beautiful, and it seems so small and relaxed.
I am currently living in a city of 1700000 residents (Stockholm), and the fast pace is killing me...
However I´m planning a short trip there in June (just to check it out).
But I was wondering if anyone here lives in Milford, or has information about the town (the Internet isn´t helping me much)
Is there a lot to do for young men who´s primal interests are hanging at Cafés, bars, sailing, boat trips and great resturants?
Also i was wondering about the general pace of the city, I´m becoming increasingly nervous with my home, because of the pollution, crime et cetera.
Is it a quite town?
Are people generally friendly and helpful?
Are the girls pretty? (Half-joke)
Are there any annual festivities that are worth checking out?
Most important: What is your personal impression of Milford?
That´s about it I think. I´m completely new to this site, and I´m sorry if I´m way out, or if I offended anyone somehow...
Best wishes and sa happy new year!
Karl

I grew up in Milford and still have family there, so I know it well!
There is a big mall and lots of shopping. The downtown area around the Green has many bars and restaurants and has become quite the spot for nightlife in recent years. Milford Harbor gives you access to boating, there is a public boat launch if you don't want to pay for a slip in the harbor.
Every August (usually around the 18th) is the Milford Oyster Festival. It is a big street festival and is very fun. There is usually something going on just about every weekend on the town green. Craft fairs, Meet the Artists (artists set up their tables and sell their goods)...
It is relatively safe, usually you hear of a murder there once every few years. Most crime is probably theft related. I never once felt unsafe anywhere in the city. Even the "bad areas" are not unsafe. They just look run down.
Housing is expensive to buy, $300,000 and up for a very small house on a very small lot. Renting isn't cheap either. It is a desireable town because of the good schools and it is on the Metro North train line, which brings you to NYC in 90 minutes. I wouldn't call Milford quiet, but there are some residential areas that are quiet and away from the hustle and bustle.
Like I said, I have spent a great deal of time there, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Milford....A good place to live
I grew up in Milford and have many friends who still live there. Milford is accessible to everything, water ,hills, cities, lakes. It has a Green in town that is one of the largest in New England. Another writer spoke of the nightlife. Milford has become a hot spot what with the Bars ,Restaurants Coffee Houses all within walking distance downtown. Though rather expensive to live there Milford seems to be what you are looking for . Certainly life would not be as noisey as Stockholm. You asked about pretty girls. Milford has, in my opinion an abundance of pretty girls. You will enjoy Milford if you choose to move there. During the Oyster Festival held in August each year there are usually some "Name" bands that perform. If you like 70's and 80's and 90's music you'll love this. Last year they had "The Spin Doctors." Crime unfortunately is everywhere but certainly less than other places in Connecticut. There are many safe neighborhoods. If you search long enough you may find something most affordable. Good luck and welcome.

Milford is a nice town. You also have New Haven nearby which has a lot of cultural activities due to Yale University. There is a decent nightlife as well, however I would pause to compare the nightlife in Connecticut to Stockholm. You will have easy access to New York City and can enjoy the nightlife there if you wish. Something else that is important is you would have easy access to Stamford using the train, Stamford is an area with a lot of good jobs.
My Mother is Norwegian and she grew up in nearby Bridgeport. The majority of Scandinavians have left the Bridgeport area but many are still in Connecticut. There are some Scandinavian stores where you can buy Swedish food and I believe there are some social clubs.

OK, it seems that you people like the town.
I´m glad that no one has any negative remarks about it, but I will have to see for my self in June.
ps: 300000 USD for a small house is a lot of money, but it´s still much cheaper than here in Stockholm. (a five room apartment in the city costs 1500000 USD, so I´m lucky if I can find something for 300000.
Thanks to you all!

There are prettier towns in Connecticut then Milford- and cheaper places to buy a house as well.
Remember Connecticut is a small state- and in most places you are an hour or less from the shoreline.
You might find towns like West Hartford, Middletown among others that fill your needs- there is much in the way of old world culture here as well.

It depends on what you are looking for. Milford is one of the nicest overall on coastal ct. I have lived there for 15 years. If you are looking for a nice newly renovated house mine will be for sale in about 3 weeks. I am looking to move to South Carolina. Hate the weather and the taxes!

well, I am basically not a "house" person, I was wondering if there are any good apartments in downtown Milford. I bet they are really expensive, but does anyone know how much a good five room apartment costs (approximately)?
Are apartments generally common in small town Connecticut?

Apartments to buy or rent?
Apartments or condos or townhouses are most expensive along the CT shore especially west of New Haven- to buy or rent- inland they are less.
