I just found a story and interview on YouTube that explains the plight of Curley's Diner and its owner, Maria Aposporos. Curley's has been a downtown Stamford landmark for decades, and has seen the city through times of prosperity, decline and resurgence. It has been fighting for its existence for years.

Ms. Aposporos is a generous and courageous woman who went against the City of Stamford's Urban Redevelopment Commission and the corporate interests behind it who were trying to take her property--and won. If you are new to Stamford, you should visit Curley's for some old-time Stamford atmosphere. If you are a long-time resident, you should go rediscover this gem and help support it in its fight to exist.

I'll have to listen to that link once I'm home (I'm at work now with no sound).

I've been fascinated with Curly's and its opposition towards the wrecking ball thats come so easily to many Stamford buildings in the past. It always amazes me how quickly and easily Stamford bulldozes a couple acres of mixed properties to make way for a huge development.
