Actually the QC is the fastest growing part of the state population wise. Tolland ranks first and Windham second. The region is attractive, with A slow pace of life, little sprawl, low crime and good schools which is attracting those of all ages; from younger people to retirees to those from out of state. I know of a couple who fled the Washington DC area for A 55 and over community in Tolland and love it!
Towns to consider are as uconn99 suggested; plus Bolton,Somers (voted by CNN/Money as one of the best small towns to live in the USA) Coventry, Tolland, Stafford Springs, and into Windham county; Woodstock, Brooklyn, Canterbury, Pomfret and Putnam. The QC is something you should consider- its certainly far different then 25 years ago, but still retains its 'quiet' character.
All of eastern Connecticut is very popular with retirees. The QC has some fine world class restaurants now, several wineries offering award winning wines, is the antique capital of the northeast (Putnam) restored B & B's and a reviving economy. Plus housing prices are the lowest in the state. In many ways it reminds me of California's wine country 25-30 years ago.
