What is Winstead like?
I am looking to move to CT from mass. I noticed that rent in winstead seems very cheap, is that because it is a small town or because it is a dumpy town? Does anyone have any suggestions on any other places to live. I will be working near Bridgeport. I come from a small (pop 12,000) upper class predominantly white suburb, and would like a place that is rural, very quiet, with good schools in ct. Im looking to pay under 1000 for a 2 bedroom. Thanks for any guidance that anyone can give me.

From Winstead to Bridgeport will take you at least 1 1/2 hour commute. With the price of gas at 3.89 for regular, you may want to consider something closer to Bpt

Winsted is not a town that most would consider attractive. It's historical but has some problems keeping up with the times. The average income for the town is lower than normal for similar towns in CT and schools can be better.
In your price range, might be able to find something in Derby or Ansonia - not very attractive towns either or rural, but much closer to Bridgeport. Both towns are very safe.
For the most part, rural in CT means expensive. You will be lucky to find a rural town with rents under 1000 for a 2br. I suggest you check out craigslist and consider a town closer to Bridgeport. You may like Beacon Falls.

Winsted is part of the town of Winchester. At one point it was a seperate city, but has been consolodated with the town of Winchester. It is an old mill town and neighbor to Torrington, which is another former mill town. It has a hard time recovering due to a poorer population and lack of economic activity. Schools are also not that good compared to the rest of the county, or CT. It is one of the least popular towns in Litchfield county for people looking for good schools and rural feeling.
Unfortunatly, as you move further south, it becomes more expensive. options to consider are the Naugatuck Valley- Naugatuck, Ansonia, Derby, Seymour, Beacon Falls, and parts of Shelton or Stratford. Beacon Falls might be a balance between cost and quality and rural-ish feeling.

Well winsted is about a hour from bridgeport so I wouldnt recommend that drive.
As for winsted itself it has its dumpy areas - and if rent is under 700 a month then its probley a dumpy area- it also has alot of nice suburban to rural areas with very few rents and mostly owners, besides that- it is located in the boonies basicly and there is very little work around here, most people who live here work in retail in town or in torrington - or they commute to the outskirts of hartford or waterbury at least a half hour drive away.
If you are going to be working in bridgeport- i would try maybe shelton or even naugatuck(30 minutes away) to get the type of housing price and neighborhood you are looking for, I have lived in both places and shelton and even parts of seymour can be nice - but not downtown, and again rentals are usually not in the nice parts.
