I will be going down to Fairfield to stay at my cousin's, but will not have a car for a week. Is there any type of public transportation to get to the train station?

There are a couple of bus routes that are run by Greater Bridgeport Transit. Check their web site to see if one runs near where you will be staying. If you are not going to be near a bus route, there are local cabs that you can call for a ride. They usually sit at the station in the evening to give you ride home when you get off the train.
