Moving to Danbury or Stamford,Norwalk
Hi,
First of all thank you for all your inputs, I have been reading your comments and it is very useful. I am planning to move to Danbury some time this summer. I will be relocating from Detroit and I have 15 month old son. My wife will be looking for a job some where near Stamford so I would like to know how difficult will be traffic from Stamford or Norwalk to Danbury ? I assume it will be against the traffic. Also will there be any difficulty getting an apartment in Stamford or Norwalk ?
Thank you

Indy, happy to be of help- and good luck in your move from Motown.
Danbury lies to the north of Stamford and Norwalk. Norwalk will be a bit closer being on a direct line via US 7- not a Freeway- the traffic during regular rush hour times can be brutal. Lots of traffic and lights.
Stamford will be an additional 7 miles to the SW on I 95 or the Merritt (CT 15)- another not very pleasant commute.
Apartments in both Stamford and Norwalk are relatively easy to find. I am sort of not clear on wanting to commute from Danbury- will you be employed there or?
Norwalk would be the easiest commute from Danbury- if you are working there I suggest living in that town. Apartment rentals will be very high in Stamford- a 2 bedroom in a nice area will be over $1500 a month.
Norwalk and Danbury will be less $$$. The commute from Norwalk to Stamford will be less of a headache then from either Stamford or Norwalk to Danbury.

Do you have a price range?
Skytrekker provided great info. I will add that if you're working in Danbury, live in Danbury. The cost of living is much less than Stamford/Norwalk. If your wife can look for a job in Danbury or Waterbury, that will be even easier. Also tell your wife to consider job searching in New Haven. The ride will be about 50 minutes from Danbury but she would not hit traffic as she would be riding Route 34 the majority of the way. The ride from Danbury to Stamford is a headache during the rush hour.
If your wife does end up working in Stamford and you in Danbury, I would suggest living in Branchville or Georgetown (sections of Ridgefield and Wilton, respectively) if you can afford it.

Thank you for your valuable input. I will be having a job in Danbury but since my wife will have more options to get a job in Stamford , we might think about living in Norwalk or Stamford. As I read in this forum driving from Norwalk to Danbury may not that brutal, . Also I was looking for the apartment rents and there is not much difference(May be between 300 to 500) between Danbury and Norwalk/Stamford,correct me if I am wrong. Our price range for 2 Bed 2 Baths may be around $ 1500 to $ 1800. Since we are from Detroit this is little bit high for us. I was going through Apartment renting sites like apartment.com or rent.com , it seems that there are not that many apartment complexes listed, is that true or I have to look at different places for rental apartment ? Any input will be very useful.

Generally you are right - Danbury will be about 3-500 cheaper than Norwalk/Stamford.
Skytrekker provided you with craigslist which is an excellent source. While there are a number of large apartment complexes in both Norwalk in Stamford (Merrittview apartments in Norwalk, and some in downtown Stamford) there are also a number of single family homes which were converted into 2 or 3 family residences.

What about Metro North? I might be moving to Stamford and I really want to live there, but I'm finding that the cost of living in Danbury and the number of affordable townhouses is much more reachable than Stamford. Danbury is further away from NYC than I'd like, but if my money will stretch farther by living in Danbury, I'm not opposed to it.
I would hate driving back and forth to Stamford as I'm sure rush hour would be hell, but isn't there a Metro North stop in Danbury that would stop in Stamford? Perhaps I have to switch trains. Any thoughts???

TrelaJoman,
Your dollar does got a lot further in Danbury than in Stamford. There is no direct train from Danbury to Stamford, so you would have to change trains in Norwalk and depending on where you work in Stamford, it might not be an option. Good luck!
