Plenty of people commute to NYC from the New Haven metro. I would suggest New Haven or Milford since both have train stations. The state is going to create commuter train service between Hartford and New Haven but it isn't scheduled to be ready for another few years.
Encourage your husband to find out if he can work from home one or two days a week. If you have a long train ride some managers will let you do some work on the train if you have a laptop.

I agree with Milford, but also might suggest Stratford and if you can afford it, Fairfield. Fairfield will be the closest to Manhattan with Milford having the longer ride. It will be a long commute but many people do it daily who are in your situation, or simply to save on home costs as they are nearly double in lower Fairfield County than what they are in Milford and Stratford.
If you don't need great schools, consider the Black Rock section in Bridgeport.

Stratford has a train station for his commute and if you were to live north of the train station, you would have relatively easy access to the parkway for your commute. I've only been on 91 north a couple times in the a.m., but it seemed to have a lot more volume than the comparable points of the Wilbur Cross. You'll still need to get on 91, but not for a long distance. Of course, Milford also has the same two attributes. Good luck.

The suggestions made by the others are all good. Fairfield, Stratford, Milford and even Trumbull or Shelton or Orange would be good. Your husband can take the train into New York but you will have to drive or join a car pool. It is about an hour drive from Milford to Hartford and the train is under 90 minutes into the city. It would probably be the best compromise for both of you. Of course the Hartford area is a nice place to live and maybe you can cxonvince your husband to give up the rat-race of the big city and settle down for a quiet life in the Connecticut countryside. Just a suggestion. Jay

Also the distance between NYC and Hartford is just over 2 hours, maybe 2.5 or 2.75 with rush hour traffic. 3.5 hours from NYC will put you almost in the Boston suburbs.

Why not Danbury? It is more affordable than lower Fairfield County and has more direct access to Hartfordwith I-84.

Danbury is about 60 miles from Hartford and the commute would be difficult since you have to get through Waterbury to get there. Milford would be 50 miles and there are no real problem areas until you get to Hartford itself. Plus traffic on I-91 into Hartford is less than traffic I-84. Jay

If you could supply a price range it would be easier to narrow the choices down. I would Stick to only the towns with a train station to NYC as the options which would be more beneficial for you spouce. It would leave the train, I-95, and Merritt all feasable for commuting options, since he would have the toughest commute. Trumbull and Shelton would leave only the Merritt. Stratford, Fairfield, Westport, and Milford would be good choices. Fairfield has the AM log jam so get by there before 6:30. The commute to Hartford from Milford and Stratford shoud be about 50 Mins. Fairfield and Westport about an hour.

Thanks a lot everyone for your suggestion. We dont have kids as yet so schools are not a priority. The 3.5 hrs that I was talking about is the train commute I guess where you change trains in New Haven. Our rent range is max 1000-1500 p.m. (2bhk) Would most of these places fall in this range including Fairfield?
