Default Milford Vs. Hamden Vs. Westville

Hello Guys. I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, but I Searched and could not find it. I'm moving to New haven this July to start my medical residency at Yale. I have three choices

1. A one bedroom milford apt (my only concern is traffic. Can someone please comment about how long it would take from exit 34 to yale-new haven hopspital from I-95 or US 1 in the morning around 7:30AM)

2. A hamden apt at Avalon walk

3. And Wintergreen of Westville, in westville. I would really appreciate any help or input.

Cyrax

From, Milford -milford is very nice, especialy if you are near the water. that's generally early for the traffic so I don't believe you would hit too much. I would pencil in 20-30 mins to give yourself time for parking. you will probably have to rely on I95 though so you could have isues at times depending on what time you commute back. It would probably take you the same time from...
Avlon Walk - you can go down 91 or straight up route 10 which should both be easy at 730am. i am a big fan of the avalon walk. it's got great amenities (gym, pools etc). also a lot of younger people, residents/professionals-coule be nice socially if you are into that.
westcville i know nothing about.
good luck, let us know what you decide.

If you like Milford, you're probably better off looking further to the east. Exit 34(Devon) is on the far western end of Milford and the area is the least vibrant in the town. It's a fine neighborhood, just not real exciting.

Default Thanks

Thank you guys.
I was wondering Lizzie, do you know specifics about Avalon Walk? There are a lot of negative ratings on apartmentratings.com for Avalon walk. But when I saw it I actually liked it. Also is it in the spring glenn area? Also what do you guys think of Westville in general, mostly in terms of safety? Thank you again guys, you are great!!!

I have not heard great things about wintergreen of westville. Supposedly the apartments have a very high vacancy rate. Some folks love Westville but I think the neighborhood has some safety issues depending on where you go.

Agreed with above - Avalon walk could be a good choice. Milford is also a great town with lots of amenities.

Just showed a residency client Wintergreen and fell in love with it! For crime in New Haven, go to newhavencrimelog.org. That website lists all kinds of things in all kinds of ways. I always tell my clients to check it out. You may be surprised. The vacancy rate is high at Wintergreen, but considering that these apartments were just built last year and there are a huge amount of them, 40% is not too bad. They have a lot to offer. They also offer discounts to people working at certain places in New Haven. Also, my residency clients tell me that they will be working many, many hours. How much time do you want to spend driving back and forth to work? My clients usually choose to live in New Haven.

Do the negative ratings have explanations? Up until a few years ago, they allowed college students to live there (mostly from Quinnipiac - and at the time I believe Quinn did not have dorms for junior and seniors). It started getting a little wild there. They NO longer allow undergraduates to live on the property. I hear that it's made a huge difference! I never actually lived there but know people who did and my house was about a half mile away. The main complaint I have heard is just that it is expensive. I think that actually helps the clientele there - more professionals and mature young people, less riff-raff.
Avalon Walk is actually in the Mount Carmel neighborhood. Spring Glen is a different neighborhod nearby (I can give you the actually streets if you want to look on a map). Spring Glen is a delightful area but it is mostly young families - strollers and dogs everywhere. It's nice over there but I don't know if there are a lot of rental opportunities as there are really no apartment buildings there.
Let me know if you have any more Hamden questions, I've been there 8 yrs.

Thanks guys,

Lizzie, The complaints were a lot about the college students at Avalon. But also because of bugs in the apartments, very rude staff, multiple issues regarding service people, possible safety issues, and of course the expense, which does not really matter to me. I also so understand that I have to take each comment with a grain of salt, since these guys were mostly the unhappy ones, but there were about 90+ complaints!!!

I also really liked the wintergreen apartments, but the neighborhood seems really shady, and after I checked out the crime website, I'm now even more concerned!!! (lot of murders, auto thefts, weapon charges, etc... on the same area and street of wintergreen)

Any other help would really be appreciated.

I doubt that you'll get any negative feedback regarding North Haven. It's a well regarded town.

If you haven't checked out the eastern end of West Haven yet, that area may also be a good compromise. Generally, it's decent and would offer easy access to Yale.
