I will be working at Yale New Haven Hospital. I was wondering which places around new haven (15-20 minute commute) are safe nice family areas to live in? I am looking to rent a condo or apartment. I am aware of Hamden and North Haven. What other places would you suggest?

Thanks a lot!

What is your price range?

Some nice towns are Milford, North Haven, Branford, Hamden, Woodbridge, Seymour and Orange. It all depends on your price range though - some are much more expensive than others. East Haven and Hamden are nice as well.

I would recommend Branford. If you will be working daytime hours at the hospital, you can take the train from/to Branford to avoid rush hour traffic. There's a shuttle that runs from the station to YNHH (333 Cedar St., the med school, technically) that goes until 9pm or so. If you're not working regular daytime hours, you should have no problem with traffic.

Branford is a busy, happening place, with lots to do for families. It's very safe (busy streets being the main danger). The town has great parks, very nice waterfront districts, lots of cultural events, and plenty of good eateries. Really the only drawback is the traffic on Route 1.

Are you doing a residency? If so, you might want to look at East Haven, too. It's safe, and closer to New Haven, although Branford might offer more family activities. But if you're going to be working all the time, that matters less than proximity. Another town to consider is Milford, but I know less about it. Maybe someone else could describe it for you.
