NH residents don't have to pay income tax, so I think this was a valid question.

There are a lot of real nice places in CT, and a lot of not so nice places. like some of the other users have said you can find a nice place in any city, if you are looking for something near meriden low crime and what not, i would recommend Wallingford or middletown. You asked about rough areas i have lived all over CT, if you stay away from certain neighborhoods you will be ok. i can list some of the areas to stay away from. ill start with New Haven. Near the downtown area is "the ville" which is a crip neighborhood the streets would be winchester ave, lilac street, shelton ave, and basset st. the next area in new haven to be away from is a neighborhood they call "the Tre". The Tre claim blood, their streets include Edgewood Avenue, Sherman Avenue, Orchard Street, Kensington Street, and Chapel Street. there is another gang near this area of whalley street with the neighborhood being "the tribe". the next neighborhood to stay out of would be the fairhaven area near grand ave. Another major gang area is called "the hill". other side of town from The Tre. Congress Avenue . This area is just behind Career High and in the area of Yale Hospital, Congress Avenue and Howard Avenue. with howard ave being the worst of the mentioned streets, a lot of shootings happen there. It sounds like a lot of bad places but if you arent wandering these areas with no purpose you will be fine, new haven is overall a nice city but i dont think it would be your best choice in transit to meriden. Hartford is a pretty entertaining city, but once again isnt quite near enough to meriden, and in 2004 made the top 10 most crime filled cities in the usa. Middletown is a choice for sure and i have lived in middletown for close to 15 years, it is a very safe city with the exception of the downtown area in the north end, specifically Ferry street (drugs like crazy) rapallo ave (same story) green st the bottom of grand st and liberty street, the city is mostly quiet if you stay away from the north end. and is within 30 mins to meriden depending on the part. meriden is from what i hear ok in certain areas but once again you need to watch where you are at. "t is typically seen in a few common areas. I would say that about 70% of town is perfectly safe with the worst area being a block if you look on a map that borders the Chamberlain Hwy, W Main St., Broad St., and Brittania St. It is like this square in the city. There are a few sketchy areas along Cook Ave as well. The only bad neighborhood really on the East Side of Broad St. is Yale Acres, a very small 2 street projects situated in the middle of decent neighborhoods. I used to walk through there from school as a child and it was never that bad." Wallingford is just outside meriden and has a lot of shopping areas and things to do, it is very quiet with crime and you rarely hear of anything happening there, this in my opinion would be your best choice, as it is right next to meriden, and new haven for that matter, with the meriden square and shopping being right near you, as well as the toads place for live music in downtown new haven. for a quick cap of the other areas in CT im sure oyu will be going to hartford, just stay away from garden st albany ave and park st, and you should be ok, hartford has professional sports at the XL center, in downtown hartford, as well as the webster theatre in the south end on webster st. new britain CT has double a baseball (pretty good quality) new britain is a pretty drug and crime filled city. waterbury i dont know much about, but from what i hear also has some bad areas, New london is pretty nice on the shorline, but once again has a lot of crime. being in wallingford you can drive to the beach within 30 mins, in old saybrook, clitnon, and westbrook and all three of these are very quiet areas with little to no crime
Hope this overkill post was good information to you.

Meriden does have some nice areas - basically the outer edge of Meriden. The "northern" end near the Berlin Turnpike, the east side, South Meriden, and I think the west side has some nice places but I am not familiar with that part. I live in Meriden, and I can say stay away from downtown if you want less crime.

I also like Cheshire, Wallingford, Durham/Middlefield, Southington.

I only rent so I can't speaking for housing, but for car taxes the mill rate is high. I have HEARD that taxes are high for homes too.
