Connecticut in the 80's-- Memories (Hartford, Meriden: home, move, traffic)

I'd like to start a list of 80's memories in Connecticut... I was born in 1974 and haven't lived in Connecticut full time since graduating high school. I am coming back next year and have found myself feeling nostalgic. I am from Fairfield County but I think I'll start the list with a couple of state-wide memories. I bet some of these still apply today.

1) Waiting in the street outside Sally's Apizza for two hours in the cold...
2) Seeing the Celtics play a home game at Hartford Civic Center.
3) Driving from Trumbull to Hartford to see the Whaler's Play.
4) Playing video games at Arnie's Place in Westport
5) Thinking that the best LInguini in Red Clam Sauce in the world was found at Cinzano's in Fairfield
6) Getting my Bar Mitzvah suit at G. Fox in the Trumbull mall, but telling people we got it at Ed Mitchell's
7) Fishing on the Hel-Cat out of Groton-- and eating at Norm's diner in the early morning
8) Flying on Flight 60 with Morgan Kaolian while he reported traffic on WICC as a birthday gift from my parents
9) Getting up at 5 AM if there was a dusting of snow to listen to the school cancellations on WICC
10) Having salad bar and steak at the Smithy in Monroe with my family on Sundays

THat's all for now... I have many, many more, but would love to read others. I hope this string takes off...

You can still get yummy steak at The Smithy restaurant in Monroe, that is my favorite local restaurant.

It seems like when I visit Westport and Trumbull-- the towns where I grew up-- that EVERYTHING has changed.

Haha, I forgot about Morgan Kaolian! My mother used to listen to WICC as we got ready for school in the morning. I also listened faithfully in the hopes of a snow day.

Waiting two-three hours to get a table at Captain's Galley in West Haven. Always worth the wait, though.

Friday and Saturday night cruising/racing on the Berlin Tpke/Meritt Pkwy. Drag racing down the road on Research Pkwy in Meriden. Massive keg parties on top of Cedar Mountain in Newington. All-night parties in the state park in Haddam. Tubing at Satan's Kingdom in New Hartford.

When I first moved here in 1987, it was Doctor Chris and José on KC101. There were also those corny commercials by SNET featuring a father's dimwitted daughter "Brooke" and the tagline: Don't hang up! In one commercial, the dog is outside the slider doors, getting completed soaked, as "Brooke" is gabbing on the phone.
