Stratford...flooding?
I visitied Stratford today with a friend, I am moving there at the end of July. We ate in a cafe close to the train station, I was very surprised to see a sign on the wall saying something along the lines of "High Water Mark, 2000" about three feet up the wall. I was not aware there is the potential for flooding in Stratford. Do the residential areas have any flood zones where insurance is necessary? Does it affect access to the train station at any time? Is it a regular occurence?
Another question for the moderator. I am a nanny, and will be looking for work once we settle in. Is it okay to advertise here? If not, can anyone recommend a good place besides craigslist?
Thank you.

Right near the train station is the overpass for the trains....the road goes down in that spot and it frequently gets "flooded". I lived about a mile from there for 15 yrs, never had flooding in my home, neighbors had some in their basement (they were down the hill from us), once. That road was never impassable while I drove on it, but during rains would sometimes be messy to go through. The high water mark was probably a short lived high, maybe a few hours, I don't even remember it happening.
It's not something I worried about in Stratford....unless you're moving to the beach area or near a river/creek/marsh, I wouldn't worry.

It was a storm in August of '00. The storm dropped about 5" of rain in roughly half an hour. If you saw it, you'll never forget it. Think Niagra Falls, that's the way it was coming down. The flooding in the center was compounded by a tidal gate(?) system that was not functioning properly.

Yes certain areas of Stratford require flood insurance
Yes certain areas of Stratford require flood insurance, I owned a condo in Stratford for 6 years. It was on the Bridgeport & Trumbull town lines. My mortgage was contingent that the condo association kept up their flood insurance. This was even though my unit was on the 3rd floor! We had to get proof of coverage from the property management team and submit it to the mortgage company annually. We actually ran into a problem when trying to get an equity line, the coverage was deemed to low, and we had to strong arm the association to up the coverage before we could get financing.
