Looking to purchase a weekend cottage, but where?
Well we are preparing for the big move to CT. Once we're all settled in we would like to look into purchasing a small weekend cottage within 2-3 hours of Oxford. We don't have to be on the ocean, a quite lake would be just fine. Just nothing too touristy. Our price range is 200-300k. Places that were recommended to us are the Poconos, Mystic, Eastern Long Island, Lake George, Cape cod and Rhode Island. Oh and any thoughts on Bantam Lake?
Please help me find a nice quaint place, or I will have to give in to my husband's wishes and get a boat instead!! Can anyone say MONEY PIT?! Thanks!

Bantam like is very pretty- our X Governor had a cottage there awhile back. It is the largest natural lake in the state.
Have you considered Candlewood lake in western CT?
Gardner lake near Salem in eastern CT might be worth a look, also Coventry lake in Coventry, aka Lake Wangumbaug.
Andover and Columbia Lake in eastern CT as well. Pachaug Pond near Griswold in extreme eastern CT.

It is possible to get a cute little place in a lake community of Candlewood Lake or Lake Waubeeka, where there are no motor boats allowed. Good luck!

Good luck finding a place on Cape Cod for 200k-300k these days. My parents payed 240k back in 2000 for a place in New Serabury. Today it is worth almost $700k.
Also, Cape Cod has plenty of tourist and can be quite busy.

I agree that you won't find much for under 300k in Cape Cod, eastern LI, RI and much of the CT shore. Candlewood is great, but it's only about 25 minutes from where you're moving. Lake George is nice, and so are the Poconos - you can probably find what you're looking for in those areas.
Who knows though...in today's market you might find a nice, affordable cottage along the eastern CT shore - Old Saybrook, Mystic, Clinton, etc.

A friend of mine has a weekend cottage on a lake near Keene, NH (sorry I can't remember the name of the lake or the town!)... It is less than 3 hours from her home in Newtown and worlds away. You might find something similar on a small lake in the Berkshires, but it would cost more than NH.
Also, the nice thing about vacationing in NH is no sales tax!!

This is a huge plus.
A friend's family has a nice little cottage in Winchester on Forest Lake... very peaceful, relaxing and modest. It's 15 minutes south of Keene and perfect for a weekend trip. Not much traffic either
