jj-
Honestly, I am open to looking anywhere that fits the general requirements. I just started the thread off of suggestions from a few friends. I have only been through Stamford on my way to NYC as a stop off for a night or 2 ....in a few weeks I hope to make a more lengthy visit. I must say that quiet nights with geese and crickets could be a compelling argument for Stamford

If you can afford New Canaan, you might as well add Greenwich to the list. Greenwich is much closer to the city and has a lot of nice neighborhoods. It is also on Long Island Sound and there are beaches for residents. Westport and Fairfield would be other options with Fairfield being the least expensive and furthest from the city.
Fairfield is a great town but I do not feel it is overun by college students. You might see a few here and there in town but it is not a party town by any means. There have been issues with residents on Fairfield Beach having run ins with students renting cottages there. This has gone on for years but is getting to be less of a problem since many of the cottages are being sold off. Good luck, Jay

As Jay mentioned, though, you should also check out Greenwich. At this point, your list must be getting long!! You should take a couple days and spend an hour or two looking and driving around all the cities and towns. You'll absolutely fall in love with the area. Good luck!

Jay- Thanks for the information.... I guess when I think of Greenwich, I always flash to rolling hills and stately mansions and attitude ...not really my style and yes I know it may not be entirely true so I'll shut up and give it a try! I do like Fairfield for many reasons ....which is why I started the thread to get some insight and narrow things down.
JJ- My list is stacking up! I will take a few days and check out each place on my vacation in a few weeks! As always, thanks for the input.

Yes - Greenwich has the image of mansions set on rolling manicured lawns but it really is a diverse community. the problem is it is just so expensive that finding a nice home will still cost you top dollar. But New Canaan is not much better though, so you should prbably look into both. By the way, Fairfield is my hometown and I do love it too. Jay

Greenwich is terrific. North Greenwich is all stately mansions and rolling lawns, but the closer to the water you get, the more densely populated it is. I'd recommend the Old Greenwich (another seaside village) and Cos Cob areas. A small house in "decent" condition will run you 800K or more, but I suspect that is comparable with New Canaan. Loads of activities in Greenwich. Rowing club, polo matches in the summer...
I lived in Greenwich as a renter for years and years, and then bought in Fairfield because it was the most similar I could get to Greenwich for much less money.

Jay-
My hometown was a small beach community in the Midwest ....each time I have been through Fairfield I have gotten a very similar vibe and maybe that is why it appeals to me
HelloSam- I will have to keep an eye out ....I have heard great things about both Cos Cob and Old Greenwich. Thanks!
