My husband and I are looking for a weekend home in New Milford. However, all I keep hearing on this board is that NM has lost it's charm and the crime rate is up. Is this all really true? Should I investigate other towns? If so, which ones?

Thanks in advance.

New Milford has had much new construction and devolpments over the last few years, compared other towns in the area primarly because there is land to build on and it is more affordable than other towns since it is further from New York. As for the crime, your best bet is to call the police station and ask for the local crime stats over the last few years. There are a lot of nice properties for sale in New Milford that would make great vacation home. Good luck!

There are many people in CT who have that "my town is better than yours in every way" frame of mind. The average Connecticut town is an above average town nationally. New Milford is a great mix of sophisticated upscale residents, middle class NASCAR fans and a tiny bit of poverty.

It is a safe, beautiful town set at the foot of the Litchfield Hills.

There are always going to be a few locals on this board or any board who lament the changes that have taken place in their community. They remember back to a time when things were slower and the town was smaller and think things were better. Time usually clouds memories and makes the past look better. You would be best to research crime in New Milford yourself and see what it looks like. Believe me there is NOT a lot of crime even if it is up. I would even say there is practically no crime in New Milford. It is a lovely town with a lot gogin for it. Jay

Thanks for all of your post. I will investigate the crime rate however, I have a feeling that my husband will make New Milford our second home. It's just really peaceful and a great place for kids to have fun.

If you live in NYC, NM would be a great place to have a second home, perhaps on the lake. However, if you're thinking of moving in and putting your kids in the school, you'd better to a THOROUGH investigation first. Be careful.

If you are inclined to investigate other towns, check out Sherman. It doesn't have a high school, so the property taxes are super low. Many New Yorkers have second homes there.
