Willimantic - ANY info
Hello,
I'm transferring to Eastern and just found out I don't have on-campus housing.. so now I have a month to find somewhere to live! I've only been there twice - once to take a campus tour, and once to look at an apartment for rent. I learned quickly there are definitely not-nice neighborhoods in the area. I'm really at a loss here and feel completely stranded. What are good and bad areas of Willimantic? I'm looking for really specific here, I know NOTHING about the area and giving a general name wouldn't really help me. Really, ANY help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Places nearby to rent close are Mansfield- also Coventry & Tolland. A bit further but not far are Vernon & Manchester.

yeah, I would rather commute a tad then live in Willimantic. Your best off renting somewhere outside the town.
I agree with PP!
I went to ECSU and willimantic is not that safe of a town.

You'd choose living in another town even if you know no one? I honestly don't know a soul at ECSU and don't want it to stay that way! But if you both are suggesting this, I guess it means it didn't just look bad.

Plenty of people live off campus. Not to mention UCONN is not far from ECSU campus. So if you have an off campus apt outside willimantic not only will you meet ECSU students but probably also UCONN students as well. ALOT of neighboring towns have TONS of rentals for students so its very likely you will be living near others!
Good luck! I'd steer clear of willimantic

mxmissileproof,
First off, Willimantic is not that bad of a place. I've lived in a town adjacent for 8 years and go to Willimantic for all of our shopping, dining, etc...
I'm not saying it's beautiful, but it gets a bad rap. Doesn't ECSU have a standard contact for helping students find housing? I'm sure they can hook you up with other students who can give you the skinny...
Let us know what you find out, I'll check my town (Lebanon) for any rents for students in the local paper...

No, they don't. All they suggested was to look at Carriage House at UConn (which I can't seem to find any contact info for anyway) and craigslist. Very unhelpful. What newspapers are around there? I found the Chronicle but I don't know if there are any others.

Carriage House would likely be full by this time.
I'd say craigslist if your best bet.

Try the Journal Inquirer, Reminder news, even try the Hartford Courant.
I'm surprised you weren't more successful with ECSU...
Good luck
