Meriden has a lot of diversity with a big hispanic population. The city is pretty run down with many homes/multi's not kept up nice at least in the downtown area.
They do have a mall and grocery store's etc and you have access to 691 which can get you to 91 or 84.
The schools are pretty poor with the only decent elementary school in the Thomas Hooker District.
In my opinion the nicest area of the city is within that elementary school district as well.
It would depend on what you're looking for on whether this area would be right for you or not.
But I would say the majority of people would steer clear.
When buying a place you always need to think about resale value as well and Meriden is not the place to get it.
Nearby Wallingford, Southington, Cheshire are much nicer towns if you will be working in Meriden.

I agree with the above post. I would disagree about the comment on resale value, in a town like Meriden real estate would already typically cost you less than in the communities surrounding it to begin with so resale in the future would reflect that.

Uconn - I was saying resale meaning surrounding communities tend to have home values that CAN increase upon selling if you've updated or whatnot. But its somewhat capped in Meriden since it's a cheaper town to live in.
Meaning dont expect to flip or anything their mainly..

Sorry to disagree, when home values rise, the typically rise everywhere, but in varying degrees - so lets say they went up 10% in west hartford, they might go up 5% in Meriden, but they do go up.

I would have to agree with Uconn97. The chances of getting better appreciation would be better elsewhere. Also note that in a down real estate market and economy your ability to sell would be easier outside of Meriden in a more desirable town. Jay

My town is one of Meriden's neighbors. When prices go up in Cheshire, this allows Southington and Wallingford (also Meriden's neighbors) to go up to (almost) where our prices were. This, in turn, allows prices in Meriden to (somewhat) backfill the price point that Southington and Wallingford just vacated.
The percentage is almost always uniform: a Colonial in Cheshire might go up 5 percent ($400,000 to $420,000) resulting in Southington/Wallingford going from $375,000 to $393,750 and Meriden going from $325,000 to $341,250.
It's usually the higher-end town that starts the market upward. It can the higher-end or lower-end town that starts the market downward.

i moved to meriden from bklyn new york thinking it would be a better place for my 4 children and myself and let me tell you ( i was wrong) there are nothing but bass-heads (crackheads) there, everyone is in everyones business, and for some reason everyone seems to be realated in someway, i call the town of meriden the town of no future. Everyones life there is on pause, you'll hear complains all around but on one does anything. Thats why i moved out...
You want help? Here are some rules:
If you got a girl? Hold her down cause you will lose her...
You like to !!@!*? Cover up cause you'll catch something...
If you got kids ages 10-16? Get strict cause they will be selling..
You got younger kids? Dont let them slip through your fingers cause they 'll be the worst. I've seen 3-6 yr olds telling their parents !!@* you, and more. Scale from 1-10 about 7% of the families in meriden are dcf(dept of children and family) cases.
Meriden is getting worst.... Your welcome.....
