They come in right over the trees- you hear them coming but because of the terrain can't see them, then all of a sudden there's the group of them over your head.
I love to know about this well! This is the only airplane noise I've ever heard and I live where the river meets the sound.

There's a blackhawk run to NYC as far as I know, once or twice a week. Never heard of them in groups of three.

Down in stamford and greenwich there are planes flying over head ALL the time.

I was at a friends house in greenwich spending the night last week, window open and I swear a jet buzzed the house at 2am. I know they aren't supposed to fly then, but what I understand is that they can just pay a fine and go wheels up. That seems to have happened, as it woke me up and I looked at the clock.

Does your friend live next door to Westchester County Airport? I've never noticed significant airplane noise in Greenwich, other than the immediate vicinity of the airport - and when the President was flying back from Westport last month.

After reading this thread it seems like most people don't experience airplane noise? We have jets fly over every day in northern FFC, and sometimes I'm awakened by them in the early morning hours. The only time it has ever been quiet was immediately following 9/11. I'm so used to it now it doesn't bother me, and it's kind of fun looking up at them. They usually seem to be flying northeast or southwest.

Of course they can fly their jet at 2 in the morning. HPN accepts federal funds and therefore cannot impose much in the way of restrictions on flight operations. They have a voluntary curfew overnight, but if you want to take you Gulfstream II and do touch and goes between three and five in morning, there is absolutely nothing stopping you, and certainly no fine.

Here in Trumbull we usually get flights out of Newark going to Boston, Portland, Halifax, Europe and other Northeastern destinations. Depending on the departing runway being used at JFK for that day, European and Boston departures can fly overhead as well. Sometimes we'll also get a flight from Houston/Orlando/Dallas going to Europe overhead, but those are non noticeable.
The only ones that are noticeable here are the learjets, golfstreams & cessnas going in and out of Sikorsky, but nothing like in Greenwich or Stamford for White Plains

I know Oxford has quite a few lear jets that fly in and out, but I'm pretty sure their flight path takes them over Southbury/Roxbury and Middlebury/Waterbury. Could that be what you're hearing?

I have no idea, although they fly directly overhead so that might not be the case. It's interesting you should mention that, we were just discussing the Oxford airport last night, wondering what kind of flights went in and out of there.

Soon after I posted yesterday, a jet flew over us, and it was headed southeast. Maybe I'm seeing and hearing what 7Express mentioned?? I have always just assumed the jets are from a number of airports. We don't always hear them, but if it's really cloudy or foggy they fly really low.

Editing to say a huge white one just flew over, heading northeast.

Wait I thought people moved in then started being concerned about the airplane noise?

Oxford has everything from small Cessnas to larger corporate jets. Same with Danbury.
