Just got back to NC from a visit to CT yesterday. I was surprised to find gas prices so close as I figured there was always a .20 per gallon difference with CT being higher. We pulled off the highway south of Raleigh and it was the same price as when we had pulled onto the highway in CT $3.69. I saw gas cheaper in CT and I know I am going to see it cheaper closer to my house but I was pretty amazed.

I have been going through the job search here in Raleigh for over 8 months now with very little luck. I contacted some folks in CT and have been all kinds of activity on my resume from up ther. I interviewed while up these last week too! Pay was substantially more and same thing with cost of living, it is not as cheap in Raleigh as people make it out to be. And the difference in my salary will certainly make up for any minor differences in COL and then some. The weather was so incredbily nice this past week too and nothing beats the 4 seasons in New England.

Hope you make it back!

Chubbs- That's a shame you won't give NYC a try. My apt at Normandie was not small. I was on the 30th floor and had a view of the Hudson and 5 bridges and the subway is just 2 blocks away. Normandie has a huge pool and gym on the top floor and an outdoor deck you can hang on. There's also a grocery store, a dry cleaner and a video store all in the building. It's crazy!! I rarely saw my roomates because they worked for investment banks. Anyway my point is this...If you want to work in finance then you are not going to see much of your apt anyway be it new Haven or NYC. My dad always said...you have to be in it to win it. Good luck.

I know its more expensive in terms of housing, but from what i can tell from visiting and talking to people is that everything else except housing and taxes is simlar to metro charlotte.

and im GLAD to pay more to get the benefits of the state, the cost of living is higher because the quality of life is better. Im going to contact Robert Half (a finance/accounting placement agency tomorrow).

But yea i have no delusions about what CT is like now. Its exactly what i want.
I read in another one of your posts that you are considering New Haven--great choice. Great place for a single person to be. Just be sure you pick East Rock or Westville--super neighborhoods.
The job market here in Stamford--where I live and work--is pretty good still. If you have the opportunity--you might want to look here. As you might know, Stamford is a HUGE financial center--with many hedge funds, investment banks, trading companies, etc. located here. I know of many that are still hiring in this bleak economy. You might want to take a peak here in Fairfield County. Good luck!

The average price for gas in CT is $3.79, in Charlotte $3.66. Not too much of a difference.

Yeah we just drove around a bit today and found it at 3.57 in Holly Springs, NC. We did see it for 3.63 in Manchester CT a few days back.

Make the move. It's all or nothing time for you. What is so different about you being unemployeed in NC or CT. Pack your things and move up North. I came to CT with a job as i transfered within my company, but if i were unemployeed i would look at all options, however i would be picky about what jobs i would take. If i was offered your starting salary of finishing salary i don't think i'd move.

25 as well

Thats a hard move to make, from south to north. The pay is different and welcome back to taxes! Its not that bad though, I love CT and probably won't leave anytime soon if at all.

Don't go back to Oxford, there are no rents and people here can be pretty materialistic with benzs, BMWs and luxury SUVs. I guess the price of oil isn't hurting those soccer moms.

The upside to Oxford is that you can still get a decent sized house for $500,000. It's more than double what we paid in TN but I guess that is reasonable for around here. Before Oxford we thought about Plainfield, Southbury and Middlebury.

look into Tolland county- but also South Windsor in Hartford county.
Towns like Tolland, Stafford Springs, Somers are low key non materialistic- if you need a rental at first- Vernon has some very nice places-as does South Windsor.

Screw Oxford, i'd never end up there. My family built our last house there on Christian Street off 67, (toward the airport). 1.5 acres of flat land, 2500 sqft cape style house. paid i think 280K. sold it 18 months later for $340K. If your saying $500k is reasonable now, oxford has changed even more than i thought.

Well that seems a little naive...
-i still get unemployment here
-i dont have to break a lease if i stay (which will cost me $2000)
-then i have to move everything which could cost anywhere from $500-$2k.
-How am i going to get an apt with no job?
-even if i do i will run out of money in a month with rent rates at $1200+
-I have an under the table job here i'm going to start soon to supplement my income.
-my parents are here for support should i really become desperate.

My point is: there are a LOT of differences, cant move without a job.
