not very pleasant-- from the size- though probably not in proportion-looks like a tarantula-but they are not indigenous to the area----not an entomologist myself

lol, it wasnt quite that big, but big enough to make me skeeve a bit, although, i got pretty close to get these pics. i was waiting for it to jump!
when he was open he was about the size of a half to silver dollar. but the body was huge. i poked it to try to get it to move in the morning, and it was no wimpy spider. solid. ewwww!

It looks like a Wolf spider. We get them a lot here. Sometimes even inside, especially the basement. I don't have the heart to kill them, so I catch them with a paper plate and cup, and release them outside. They are big, and really give me the creeps. I'd be afraid to try and kill one, for fear it might fight back.

Editing to say we are surrounded by several acres of woods where we live, which is prime habitat for that spider. I didn't seem them very often when we lived in the Norwalk and Stamford area. I think these spiders are also often called "wood spiders" by people, too.

I'm glad you didn't kill him (her?), because I really think they unjustly suffer for their looks. I routinely escort spiders out of the house into our backyard... of course, my wife thinks I'm nuts....
