Stratford schools
O.K. so this is my second post about the schools is Startford.
There is a house we are interested to buy but the school district is Stratford Academy. It is a Magnet school and there is a waiting list. Therefore my kids would be asigned to a different school and the board of Ed. can't tell me which one until I go there w/all the papers.
Would that be too much of a gamble. Are there schools in Stratford where my kids risk to be beat up because of there race or anything crazy like that???
I would appreciate any answer.
Thanks
Steph

If you need to ask these questions then I think you should not buy in Stratford--you appear to need some diversity training or something...Stay in Orange where the population is pretty much homogeneous and you won't have to worry about these things.

I'm not comfortable with making an assumption like that. I personally know two black females named stephanie, so i won't make an assumption regarding the OP's race.
To answer the question, i seriously doubt that there would be a racial issue for any children in the Stratford system. What would concern me though, is that Chapel, Eli Whitney, Wilcoxson, Nichols, and Second Hill Lane will not be options while you're waiting for Stratford Academy. The remaining elementary schools will not, imho, be on nearly the same level as what you're coming from in Orange.

I think I am pretty open when it comes to diversity. I attend one of the most international church there is, have friends from all over the world, have travelled a lot myself and am not even from this country originaly. Neither is my husband.
I did get concerned reading another post about a child being treated badly about it's race. I don't know where that was. I think that would be an awful thing and would hate to see that happen.
I am like any mother, trying to find the best for my kids.
Not assuming that it would be in Orange.
I am new to this forum, are people usually coming here to pick fights??
I am just trying to get some info. here.

So, if we are waiting to get in Stratford Academy, where would our children attend? Franklin only?

Stratford Acadamy is Honeyspot House (K-2nd)and Johnson House (3rd-6th), which are basically 2 sides of the same building.
If that is your neighborhood, then they will likely try to put your kids in there. However, yes, Stratford is PBOE. When we had family living there on Broadbridge Ave. (right by Nichols school), they were told that Nichols was overcrowded and that their child would be bussed down to Honeyspot.

Which is a better choice than Franklin? According to greatschools.net that is the case, but I'd love a local's opinion.

Is the Board of Education refusing to tell you the school until you have purchased a home? This would really bother me. You are making what is probably the largest purchase in your life and a big part of it is not known. I would reconsider. I know people will say why does it matter but it does and I understand your concerns. JMHO, Jay

Yes, they won't let us know. But we are closing and moving in the next week, so we can't back out now! I was under the impression that Franklin is full, I don't know where my daughter will be bused to. She attended a Bronx school last year, so anything in Stratford is actually a step up for us.
