For the record..about Waterbury
I am moving there this month.I have only seen the area in the day.
I am going to live in the Oakville Waterbury section (zip 06708).
Please tell me is this a bad area? I hear alot of people say its very crime ridden, and dangerous.I am from NYC (Queens)so I'm used to being in semi- rough areas..is it that much worse than NY? The way some people make it sound,it seems like there are shootings and massacres every day. Some one set the record straight.

Are you sure you're moving to Oakville (Waterbury) and not Oakville (Watertown)? Can you tell me the name of the closest major street that you're living near?
Waterbury only had 3 murders last year. By no means is it dangerous. Most of the people on this board that make comments in the Connecticut section are from the suburbs and they trash Waterbury because it ruins the perception of "Connecticut"; big houses with big lawns and college-bound teens. If that's what they moved to CT for, then i guess they have a right to be mad
We get New York news in Waterbury, so when something really big goes down, you'll see us up there. Like when the guy robbed the bank in March, we was the top story on channel 4 new york. But are we up there alot?? No.
Trust me, its not that bad. Let me know if u have more questions.

Coming from an outsider who has family close to the area....is it a giant ghetto? No. Are there worse places in CT? yes. Would I take the time and expense and hassle of moving to move there? No way. It's kind of a run down, ugly city, imo.
Also, IMO, the only people I can see living there are people who've lived there their entire lives or people moving from the worst ghetto possible. Then, yes, Waterbury will seem like nice town.
My dad's family are your typical Portuguese from Naugatuck and from what my grandmother says, Naug and Waterbury were nice places back in the '40's and 50's. But that was then, this is now.

Over 100 orthodox Jewish families moved from Brooklyn and Rockland County to Waterbury in under 5 years. Most of them are business owners and/or college educated white-collar workers. They hardly come from the "ghetto."
There are some very nice areas in Waterbury and downtown is coming back little by little. In fact there are serveral areas that look suburban.

downtown still has a long way to go, business owners can't even be bothered to sweep outside their stores. I live in Prospect, however I went to high-school and waterbury and volunteered in down town waterbury. There is no way I would ever want to live there. The taxes are way to high, 9 out of every ten mayors, is corrupt.
The school system is horrible, I used to tutors kids who went to th epublic schools there.
It's just doesn't feel safe, and for what your paying, you could live in a nicer area. Waterbury is dirty, thats best way to describe it. There are to many renters, who don't care about the property. You drive downtown and you see garbage on every street, and homeless people walking around, it's not nice.
I would have play rehersals at the museum by the green, and we would get out late at night, to see drug dealers on every corner, oh and the hookers two streets over.

The closest major street I would be near would be Bunker Hill rd,and Straights turnpike would be around a 5 min drive from me.

9 out of 10 mayors??? UMM..I think more like 3 in the past 75 years (idk where she got 9, but once again, here's another ridiculous exaggeration that has nothing to do with NOTHING..as the last was in 2001 and here we are going into 2009
starzy, the area that u live in I would consider to be Bunker Hill, and its one of the safest areas in the city. The elementary school that services the area that you live is called Carrington, and when I was going into middle school, the kids from carrington were some of the most prepared compared to the 6 other schools that went to North End.
Very decent neighborhood, depending on what you call "decent"
Jus keepin it real!!

Thanks Bluebrass, sounds suitable to me.I consider some parts of the Bronx decent,so Waterbury can't be that far of a stretch. Thanks to everyone for your opinions.

It's more than three in 75 years seeing as how in the last 20 years there have been three. You can look it up in wikipedia, waterbury had had a long history of corrupt mayors. It's a miracle they mad it the past seven.
