Are you saying it's not Hartfirt?! Next, you're going to tell me that Buckley and Bulkeley are pronounced differently.

"Bury" = berry. Or, if you prefer, "bury" as in "to put into the ground." I don't know how anyone could get "bur ree." This is one way to spot which TV news anchors are from this state and which ones aren't.
Don't forget Roxbury! (or Rox-berry)

Default And another one...

Thanks, everybody.

Here's another one I just ran across while surfing real estate sites:

Weatogue -- an area just west of US 202 south of Simsbury. My guess is: "WEE - uh - togue".

Also, while you've got me going: Poquonock (off the Bradley Connector south of Windsor Locks). "poe - QUAH - nock"???

Add Simsbury to the "bury" list.

Barkhamsted. The correct pronunciation is "Bar-Cam-Stedd". Not "Barkum-stedd". Geez, I feel Bob Steele giving the Word for the Day!

Also -- Berlin: "Ber-LIN" (like the city in Germany) or "BER-lin"?

Thanks.

I always wondered the same thing as well regarding Southington and Berlin. I pronounce Berlin the same way I would pronounce the same city in Germany and for Southington I go with what I think it is the right way in English to pronounce it. Regarding the last one, I have asked few other people from other parts of the US, Canada, and UK and they all pronouce it South-ing-tun. I have no idea where the Suth-ing-tun came from.
To me it almost sounds like they are saying Sudd-ing-tun.

It seems for Berlin, the locals pronounce it BER-lin but still call the German city ber-LIN, different parts are emphasised. The Courant did an article about it and stated that maybe the pronunciation changed during the war to distance association from what was happening in Germany. As for Southington, the locals sometimes say "suthington" only because they pronounce the name faster.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Mianus (My-ay-nus, not My-an-us).

I know this isn't pronunciation but an awful lot of people spell Seymour, "Seymore." Even people who live in Connecticut!

Ledyard is pronounced Ledyerd.

Lebanon is ponounced Lebanin.

Weatogue is actually a section of Simsbury like Tariffville or West Simsbury. It does have its own Post Office and Zip code but is not incorporated.

Poquonock is a section of Windsor, just south of Bradley Int. Airport.
