Upscale Bedroom Communities
Hello. Looking to relocate. What are the smaller, upscale towns closest to NYC? I'm looking for postcard type towns that are exclusive with good schools. Thanks.

Greenwich, CT is the most upscale, close to NYC and good schools, though most their i would think probably pay for private schools.

Try New Canaan. It's very upscale, with a small village-like downtown, and excellent schools. Of course the upscale towns nearest NYC are going to be very pricey.

Greenwich proper is less small-town than it used to be. Actually, you might want to try the village of Old Greenwich. It's about 40 minutes from New York City on the train. Also check out New Canaan. And Darien.

Many of the towns in Fairfield County fit your description. In addtion to Greenwich and New Canaan, I would also suggest Darien, Westport, Weston, wilton and Fairfield. These are all upscale suburbs of New York with a lot of charm. each one has its own feel, so you will need to check it out yourself to see which one is best for you. Jay

Sure, some go to private schools, but Greenwich High School is a great school, probably one of the best in the country for public high schools. And with an enrollment of 2300 kids, plenty of families send their kids there.

Many of Greenwich's wealthiest residents send their kids to GHS. An excellent school, it's also very diverse.

Greenwich, Ct has a pop of over 50k and no the very wealthy do NOT send their kids to the public schools. Please check out cnn.money for articles on upsale exclusive towns in CT with New Canaan being #1 and Darien #2 for highest median income in the Country - not just CT, but the entire Country. Wesport falls in the top 10. Greenwich does not make the list at all. Public schools in all three towns are excellent. See cmt.org for mastery test results.

I worked for "the very wealthy" in Greenwich once, and they stated that the high school was a bit "rough" and so their children attended Brunswick and Sacred Heart.
Greenwich is more diverse than one might think, which could be a very good thing.

Agree, doubt many w/resources sends their kids to Greenwich public schools....
Greenwich has quite a few slums along 95 corridor and many dumpy, old $1MM+ houses that lack basic amenities of new $300K tract houses in suburban Dallas...and much economic diversity...not surprising, when houses range from <$1MM to >$30MM....and majority commute 3rdWorld-style via train to Manhattan and fly commercial and a minority have large private family planes like G550s parked at Westchester's airport (in addition to a few respectable family cars to commute to office in Greenwich or MidtownManhattan)....
Would evaluate any school based upon what fraction of students enter respectable colleges like Stanford/Wharton/Harvard.....rest of stats are fairly meaningless and easily manipulated....often amusing to see how few kids from allegedly "good" schools manage to enter decent colleges....and even more amusing is how few of the kids who manage to enter allegedly decent colleges ever accomplish much in their careers 5-10-15yrs post-college....
