Default where to live in downtown Hartford

Hi everyone,

I will be moving to downtown Hartford for work next month. I will probably move to West Hartford in 6 months or so to live -- given the recommendations by others. For the time being, though, I want to be closer to work, and take my time to get accustomed to the area.

I am considering several apartment buildings, and was wondering if people could give me some insight into: 1) the buildings/apts themselves; 2) the neighborhoods/streets on which they reside; and 3) which other buildings/streets should I be considering and which ones should I be avoiding.

Any info on any of these would be great, especially as they relate to how safe/dangerous the streets around them are:

1) Adrian's Tower, 360 Main St.
2) Bushnell Towers, 1 Gold St. or Bushnell on the Park
3) 250 Main
4) Park Place Towers, 24 Park Pl.
5) 915 Main
6) Morgan at the Park, 600 Asylum Ave.
7) Park View Towers, 967 Asylum Ave.
8) Union Place Apts., 74 Union Place
9) Colt Gateway, 140 Huyshone Ave.

Any other suggestions are welcomed. I am basically looking for a studio or 1br under $1100 or so. I read elsewhere that the area near the Hartford Hospital is sketchy, is that true? (and if so, how far does the area extend)?

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Both of these are in sketchy areas. Probably not good places to live if you want to go on regular walking tours of your neighborhood, though Park Place Towers has (or used to have) decent security within the complex itself.

Bushnell Towers, 1 Gold St. or Bushnell on the Park - my BIL lived here for a while and I work with someone who currently lives at 1 Gold. Also check for possible rentals at Linden place. They have never had any problems and my BIL enjoyed the convenience of walking to work. He rented condos at Bushnell towers and at linden place. Both were very nice. I would agree with what goldenband said above. And its true as you get closer to Hartford Hospital some of the neigborhoods still have a ways to go. I would drive around this area and see what your comfort level is.

Check into Hartford 21.

Although it is expensive, they are giving good incentives to live there right now.

I have been to 250 Main is not in as nice condition as some of the others you mentioned. But it is very cheap. Convenient if you work downtown. As you head south it becomes less safe probably would not walk around at night.

Park Place Towers is pretty nice and cheap, rent includes heat and hot water. Safety - it is totally enclosed so you are safe in the apartments - but the surrounding area if you walk around is not safe.

Right downtown there are some nice places on Trumble & hartford 21 but they are a little more pricey. They are more downtown so generally safer.

You are correct the part by the Hospital - if you mean Hartford hospital is not safe.

Parts of Hartford not safe, generally not a good idea to walk around are:

- Farmington ave East past Sisson ave down to aetna.
- Hartford hospital area
- South of Capital ave generally not safe
- North side past 44

- Colt building ( if you mean the apartments that are being converted from the old colt building) is in a bad section of hartford. Colt park is very bad would not walk there at any time in the day. There are bums and drug attics there
