Kathleen - Check craigslist.com for rentals. Go to the New York City section and there is a section on Fairfield County that should have some listings. Also check Realtor.com. Good luck, Jay

Yeah, absolutely. Stamford has truly "little" urban landscape--as compared to most cities its size. It is a well-ran, and well-planned city for the most part, and the amount of green, serenity, and small-town charm are very common in this city of 120k...You'll find much more green and peace and quiet than urban here.
Stamford sounds like it would suit you very well. There are abundant townhomes, apartments, and/or houses for rent in the downtown area--with the train station a quick walk away. Downtown is very safe, family-friendly, and is growing and changing quite quickly. The train to Grand Central (express) is 44 minutes. The drive into the city is about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes (depending on traffic--sometimes less than an hour is possible). I own a home in Stamford and live in mid-city (the Bulls Head neighborhood). I marvel at how small it feels, yet at the same time, we have such "big city" amenities in terms of culture, excellent restaurants, great bars, wonderful beaches, access to hiking trails and plenty of nature, and the schools are pretty good, relatively speaking.
Fairfield is another city that you might like as well--but keep in mind that it is about another 25 mins +/- further away by train, in terms of an NYC commute. Fairfield is safe, has outstanding schools, and is one of the best places to live for a family, anywhere. It's downtown is an excellent mix of hip/charm/revitalization.
