Ive known several people from bridgeport and I have passed through there. Basically this is a town with both very bad areas and also very good areas, depending where you live. All of the people I have met (from both areas) were usually very nice respectable people. The downtown areas are likely the high crime areas you hear about.

Last year I visited southern Connecticut and took my daughter to the zoo in Bridgeport. The zoo was nice but I was not impressed with the overall area. Much of it looked rundown.

I also had many years there, my girlfriend of many years grew up there. I have many thoughts and non really complimentary at all about Bridgeport. I would love to know in detail the analysis that CNN did and how they came to their conclusion. My first thought was some one paid them to make that prediction. When I read it, I had a good laugh.

From some who who know
After reading the other responses from people who don’t in Bridgeport I had to post something. Bridgeport is ranked one of the top cities to invest in I’m not going to get into why but look up something called Harbor Place and as for the bad areas there about to go. Most of the bad neighborhood, many of the old factories have been torn down, are being torn down or turned into condos. witch leave a lot of water front. The bad areas are also on near the water in for the past 7 or 8 years some there been a lot of 2 and 3 family homes torn down and replace with a 4 bed room two car garage single family. The city is also using every chance it get to take homes and replace it with something nice, right now there making a new school where 22 run down houses use to be. All I suggest is that you look into it for you self and not listen to people who know of Bridgeport from what the see on the news and I 95
And as for the schools do what my mother did send your kids to school in another town

Living in Bridgeport
I'm a young professional, who has lived in Bridgeport for the past 5 years & I like it here. We live in the North End which is quiet & friendly & there's a real sense of community here. The main reason we moved here was b/c we couldn't afford to live anywhere else close enough to Stamford, where we currently work. Yes, the taxes are high but the city is going through a major revitalization & there are tons of new development projects going on. I think it's a great, affordable place for many young people who can't fork out half a million dollars for some of the more overrated cities like Stamford (which also has a terrible school system, by the way).

bridgeport is the nicer of the two because many people dont see the nice pat of bridgeport which is the northend and some of the west end which look better then certain parts of shelton and people who say that bridgeport is bad they dont know nothing because they dont even live in bridgeport to me bridgeport is nice i live there i go out and walk any hours i think why peoplesay bridgeport is bad is that they see alot of black and hispanocs living there.and u cant compare thse other little towns with 33,000 with the biggest city in ct which has about 140,000 people thats about more then 4x the population of these other near by towns. so actually the crime rate is not that bad for a big city like bridgeport......because u could combine shelton trumbull, monroe, derby, and bridgeport will have more residents then all thse towns combined if u live in bridgeport it fell safe to us its just people who no nothing about bridgeport are very quick to give there opinion without knowing anything.

I love it... You speak about it like it's the best and then you say, " And as far as the schools do what my mother did send your kids to school in another town"
You just disproved everything you previously said. I lived there my whole life. I dont care how many houses are built, there are still going to be ghettos. marina, stratford ave., I could go on and on...Dont speak so highly and then say what you said.

Just four words "Stay away from Bridgeport", I have friends who live the next town over and they have nothing good to say about the area, one time I went to bridgeport to put some gas in my car and was flooded by people who wanted to sell me stolen merchandise, the roads need building and the neighborhoods could use a paint job, I can tell you this because I have sometimes to drive through it on business related issues.
Hope this Helps

Artsenal - It sounds like you were probably in the East End, which is a problem part of the city. The North End, Black Rock and Beardslely Park are three beautiful neighborhoods in Bridgeport. There are others. Bridgeport is a large city and you can't judge it by just one or two neighborhoods. If you did, then you would have to tell people to stay away from New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and every other large city in the country too. Jay

I agree with JayCT, I might have spoken too soon, the area I am mostly exposed to is the one close to the highway, that is where I always get the bad impression of bridgeport as having a bad rep.
