Plymouth- population 12000, lies on the other side of the Naugatuck river (east) from Thomaston. Known as the 'Gateway to the Litchfield Hills'. Nice town, with many historic buildings, much from the colonial period.

Plymouth is nice...a bit removed from "everything" if you will, but a nice town.

From what I understand the RT72 connector is now finally going to be extended into Terryville which will open up Plymouth's access greatly.

The Town of Plymouth is actually made-up of the Plymouth, Terryville, Pequabuck, and Fall Mountain sections. Terryville is more of the hub of Plymouth. All sections together total about 12,000 people. It all has a small town feel/community feel to it. There are 3 elementary schools (1 in Plymouth, 2 in Terryville), 1 middle school (in Terryville), and one high school (in Terryville). The Town Hall, Police Dept. and main/bigger library are all in the Terryville section. Now-a-days, there are many empty buildings that used to be occupied by businesses that haven't existed in years. Taxes are higher in Terryville/Plymouth than some of the neighboring towns. Crime is very low. A new high school is being built, with plans to move the middle school to the existing high school, and combine the 2 elementary schools in Terryville to the existing middle school building --- don't know if they have decided, yet, what to do with the 2 elementary schools that will be emptied when they make this move. There's not a lot to do in town - most people shop in Bristol or Waterbury -- the town has a little plaza with a little IGA grocery store, CVS, video rental store, Chinese Restaurant, Itallian restaurant, smoke shop, dollar store, and Dunkin' Donuts. There are several pizza restaurants in town, many gas stations, but no fine restaurants. There is a McDonald's and a Whole Donut. There are 2 motels, but I don't know anybody that has stayed at them (they are far-from 4-star places). The 2 town greens (one in Plymouth and one in Terryville) are small, but nice. The Plymouth one has a beautiful, old Congrgational Church located on it, and it's located at the top of a hill that leads down into the town of Thomaston. (Way back -- Thomaston used to be a part of town, too). There is a lake in the Terryville section that had been used for swimming in the summer, but it has been closed due to unclean water. It has a track area around it that many people used to walk around, but I'm not sure how many people use it these days. A new Lyceum and ambulance building have been built in the downtown section of Terryville, across from the green, and they have added to the appearance of that section. On a nice day, you are bound to see people walking the streets, greeting each other as they pass. In the summer, various bands play concerts down on the green in Terryville. It's a safe place for kids, but as they grow older, you are sure to hear them complain that there is nothing to do. There is no "Y" nor are there any youth clubs, etc. in town (although there is a Boys & Girls Club in neighboring Bristol). The Recreation Department (located in the Town Hall in Terryville) does have quite a few activities for kids, and the library has story hours, etc. Youth soccer and Little League Baseball used to be big in town when my kids were little, and I think they are still thriving. The high school has most sports teams (at least at the Varsity level --- some don't get enough kids to man Junior Varsity teams), but they don't have a football team, if that is of interest.

Update to my Terryville/Plymouth post...
The new Terryville High School has been built, and students now occupy the building. The old high school is being renovated. This will be the last school year for both elementary schools in the Terryville section (Prospect Street School 1904 - 2008, and Main Street School 1925 - 2008), as elementary students will occupy the present middle school, and the middle school students will occupy the old high school for the 2008 - 2009 school year.

Growing up in Bristol, we used to always make fun of Plymouth folk for being redneck/hillbilly types. Seriously though, Plymouth is a nice little town if you are a stay at home type or don't mind driving a ways for things to do. Personally, I would prefer Thomaston which is similar but just a bit more interesting in my opinion.

I'm personally not a big fan of Plymouth, nothing to do and when you drive thru it I notice the buildings are a bit dumpy. Schools aren't great either.

We have been living in Plymouth for the past 23 years. My husband & I grew up in Southington.Plymouth has some very pretty areas. We have 3 Lakes in Plymouth. We live on one.Theres Lake Plymouth,Lake Winfield & Fall Mt Lake.Lake Plymouth is private & Fall Mt is private. Yes the center of Terryville has a little eyesore by the (Eli Terry)waterwheel. But they are going to make a park area there I believe. And lets face it.Everytown has room for improvement. Were just not a wealthy town. Our country sides are very pretty. We have an old town flair. We have the Terryville fair,& on Memorial Day the 5th graders from Plymouth Center School ,recite the Gettysburg address on the steps of the Congregational Church on the Plymouth Green. My sons were so proud when they were a part of that.when they were young) How many children get to honor & be a part of this very special town history reciting Abraham Lincolns famous words? We have alot of History here! Plymouth reminds me of the Southington I grew up in the 60's we had more stores for shopping down town then. But so didn't Downtown Terryville ( The malls did a job on that.)So business have a hard time making it.Even in Thomaston, which is a great little town also, has in the past few months lost 3 bussiness down town. But we offer a very pretty part of Litchfield county !Winter time is very festive in our area.As you go down Plymouth hill (Thomaston is all lit up,& in continues up through Plymouth & Terryville.) Terryville is the home town of Ted Knight. We have the New England Lock Museum, where the locks were made here by Eli Terry.Thomaston is famous for the Seth Thomas Clocks. So if you want a small town that has pride, were one of them.

I may agree that there is not a whole lot to do here in plymouth. but the schools are awsome at least Plymouth center is. My kids both go there and not only have they continued to do well but they have excelled.
