Where Should I Relocate to in Connecticut?
I am a native New Yorker now residing in Northern Virginia (right outside DC). I am considering a move back up north but want to/need to live in a nice place in Conn (clean, low crime, good schools, etc.). I would like to be close enough to NYC (I don't want to be any closer than 1 hour) so anything between 1-2 hours away is fine. I know there are very expensive parts of Conn and I'll tell you, I have a household income of about 140K so no, don't think I can afford Greenwich....so where would be affordable and decent?
PLEASE HELP

With that income, you can live pretty much anywhere, even Fairfield County. I would recommend the Town of Fairfield. It is a great town with excellent schools and a lot of good family activities. There is a nice downtown area with a lot of great shops and restaurants and there is a small community run movie theater there that has second run movies at reasonable prices. Fairfield has many nice parks and beaches and is about 90 minutes to New york. There are many great neighborhoods and homes are a little more reasonably priced than lower Fairfield County. I hope this helps. Jay

I would have to disagree that with an income of $140k you can comfortably live in lower Fairfield County. It is one of the most expensive areas in the country and we are getting by with an income around $100k living a very modest lifestyle. Certainly it depends on the town (you might be able to afford Monroe, Shelton and the greater Danbury area).
I would suggest looking in the less expensive New Haven area (nice suburbs are Woodbridge, Milford, Orange, Bethany, Branford, Guilford, North Branford) or the Hartford area (even more affordable).

Kidyankee, I absolutely agree!! My household has an income of around $150k, and we are definitely "middle-class" here in Stamford. We'd need to increase our income by at least $100k per year to be considered "comfortable." Might be shocking to some, but very true.

1-2hrs away is a nice zone to look at. Lower fairfield overpopulated but definetly within that 1-2 hrs from NYC. How about North Stamford? Or some areas of Milford. Stay away from Bridgeport & Fairfield.

I'd say a lot depends on how much you can afford as a down payment on a house/condo. That will determine exactly what you can afford, and direct you to more specific locations.
But you've gotten some great suggestions so far, a few more towns to consider would be Bethel and Newtown.

You guys are GREAT! That was all good advice. Thanks. By the way, I currently live in Loudoun County Virginia, if anyone knows the area. It was rated the "richest" county in the USA last year. I guess that explains all of the foreclosures of the 800K single family homes that's bringing down my !@#@##%& property value. This is a GREAT place to live but it is BORING as HECK! And being a native New Yorker....I need to be closer to home. Plus the chain restaurants are klilling me. I appreciate all of the answers. Thanks again

Why do you say to stay away from Fairfield. It is a great town with excellent schools and so much to do. There are many wonderful neighborhoods and a wide range of housing options. As a matter of fact I would prefer it to many of the other towns in the area. Many other people agree since it is considered a very desirable town. Jay
