Question info about unusual railroad sight in Stafford?

Hello, out there. Back in the spring of 2005, I was tooling around Stafford on a little Sunday drive and stopped at the ice cream shop downtown that's right next to the train tracks. I believe it's called the Ice Cream Depot. While I was there, a group of travelers were there and for years I have not been able to figure out who they were or what they were doing. They seemed to be mostly families and couples and a friendly crowd, and they all were driving differently sized, shaped, and colored train cars along the tracks on up into Monson, Mass. These train cars were like go-karts for railroad tracks and I overheard one man mention something about "one of these" [rallies?] in New London this summer. Has anyone heard of such a hobby? It looked like fun and it's been puzzling me off and on since then. Thanks!

They are called "speeders". The railroad track workers used them to patrol the tracks and do repair work.
In Connecticut their is a good size club that travels around to different areas to run the "speeders"
I know that their is a member in Shelton, CT. I'll do some research and post what I can.
