Its true that the part of CT closest to NYC is the most expensive but there are areas that are decent. The inland side of fairfield is good. but I wouldn't want to go anywhere north of fairfield becuase I'd not want to spend hours on a train every day. I"m actually in the same boat. I'm from fairfield, connecticut and want to move back. Stratford is decent but I want to work in NYC anything past exit 24 off Interstate 95 is pushing it timewise. Norwalk has some decent areas but avoid south norwalk, the "ghetto" section. They are trying to spruce up bridgeport but stilll..... I'd be leery. If you like the "urban" setting, I'd check out stamford. I believe the decent sections of norwalk are pricey. I personaly would check out some neighborhoods in Brooklyn as my cousin lives there and he loves it as its hip trendy and can be affordable.

I'm a paralegal and want to work in NYC for the $ but for your consideration, Stamford, Bridgeport, New Haven and Hartford are all high business urban areas so perhaps you should consider those areas too. To answer the coment above about Norwalk, its in great proximity to NYC, exit 15 or something like that off I-95 but it has some BAD areas and I'm fearful the "good" areas wil be pricey.

Stamford is your best bet, rents are expensive but you can find something in that range.
