This may be my last post for a long time. I might be able to help you. There is one set of projects I know of in Naugatuck, the ones down the street from the high school. But they are very quiet and I've never heard of murders or anything up there. To me, Naugatuck is a sleepy town (I once read in the rep-am that they have only 9 police cars, must not be too much crime). There is another set of low-income apartments in Naugy; Lewis Circle. I went there for a party a few years ago and it seemed pretty safe to me.
The only apartments that I know of that would be expensive would be in the north end up by Spring St. They look relatively new, they sit next to a huge golf course, and the area is pretty quiet. I actually suggest looking into a 2 or 3 family in naugy also. They're not that bad

Thanks for all the input. I think a 2 or 3 family would be ideal, if I can find one that has been renovated in the past 20 years. For me, it's really about location, and Naugatuck really appears to be close to almost all I need without being a place I wouldn't want to live. Any other tips/comments are appreciated.
Naugatuck is actually really nice and has a lot of different diverse areas- it has a lot of character compared to other towns in the area. I know a LOT of really nice people living in Naugatuck. I lived there for over 10 years and always liked being there (I still sing in a choir group there on Monday nights in fact- great group). There are a few areas that are not as appealing as others- but you will be able to sense that easily when you visit.
Secondly if you are going to be in the Hartford area more than not, I would also consider a town along the Merrit such as Wallingford or Hamden. This way you can shoot up 91 to Hartford without issue and/or the traffic that is pretty tough on 84 East of Waterbury. You can also just shoot down the Merrit to points South.
I think Wallingford is a much "nicer" town than Naugy even though they have a lot of similarities. Not that I hate Naugatuck by any stretch, heck I lived there. I'm just saying it like it is.

Good luck!
Not to nitpick, but this stretch is the Wilbur Cross. The Merritt Parkway runs from Greenwich to Route 110 in Stratford (the exit for Sikorksy).

Thanks, jviello... How far is Wallingford from the train? Time into Manhattan is one consideration...

10-15 Minutes you can be in DT New Haven and Metro North - no train changes, just a straight shot to NYC. The Merritt (Wilbur Cross ) travels all along the shore, so you can pretty much jump off and hit a train station of your choice if New Haven doesn't work for you. Milford would be the second easiest train to hit off the Merrit IMHO.
If you were to drive to the city, IMO the travel distance would be about the same...actually, I just did a google map search and they are about 5 miles difference to NYC.
To me Wallingford is a much more vibrant city with a very very nice downtown with restaurants, pubs, shops and you have access to the box stores and nice countryside too if you want it.
Rosemary Choate is a private school located in Downtown and they are always having shows and events too. Plus they keep up a lot of the victorian homes and such surrounding downtown. We always go there to see Gaelic Storm. ( YouTube - Gaelic Storm - Drink the Night Away
Wallingford has great access to many parts of the state with both RT15 (Merrit) and I91 and I691 intersecting right there.
I had my old business located in Wallingford for that reason, and my wife grew up there and my in-laws still live there so I know the city pretty well. I also grew up in Waterbury/Prospect and lived in Naugy so I know it pretty well too. If I had a choice, I'd go to Wallingford.
Electricity is also much cheaper there as they have their own power company. Property taxes are MUCH lower in Walingford as well. 21 compared to 38.8 if I'm not mistaken. Remember, that includes your automobile if you are just renting.
That should get you started.
