Hey guys,

Does anyone have any thoughts on Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven and the areas around it?

I did part of my graduate work there so did not live on campus but the area is okay around it...not great but not horrible. Would I send my child there? No (but then again my oldest is 5 )

I used to live near there in Westville and I liked the neighborhood. Safe, good people, convenient, etc. The only real dicey area to watch out for by SCSU is down Goeffe Street heading towards downtown. It starts off OK but gets gritty quickly. Oh, and Valley St between SCSU and the Parkway has some sketchy areas, I wouldn't want to live there either.

The school itself is fine. They are well known for their teaching programs (it used to be a teaching college). I have taken a couple classes there before to bang out some requirements in the summer/winter when I was home from college and found the professors to be good and had a great experience all around. I know many people who went there (I grew up in Milford) and they were happy with their education.

Many people I know who went there lived in Westville, adjacent areas of Hamden, and around the area of the Whalley Ave/Boulevard intersection.
