I'm a big price shopper, so we normally shop at Shop Rite (which I HATE esthetically and time-in-store-wise, but the prices are rock bottom) and occasionally A&P. I will stop at Stop & Shop if we need something last-minute while my kids are at ballet or karate because it's close by, but for weekly shopping, it's too expensive.

I love Trader Joe's in West Hartford. I always get dairy, meat, cereal, and produce there for much less than what Stop&Shop costs ($0.19 each for bananas, versus $0.99 each at S&S) and they have a huge selection of frozen food/ready-to-eat meals. I do the rest of my shopping at Target (dry/canned) and try to buy the Market Pantry store brand whenever possible, it saves a lot of money & the products are the same as the brand-name stuff.

don't know if we have a favorite store really. Mainly do our shopping at stop and shop and occasionally go to whole foods and highland park. Agree with Jay about shaws - i shopped there for a while, but found they were always out of something i needed. My mom and others I know swear by the prices at shop rite, but I worked there through my teen years and still have a certain aversion to that store to this day!

When I lived in CT I liked Shop Rite, not the store so much, but they did alot of donations to small local groups, that would have a hard time otherwise. So I shopped there (my other local choices were big y, and stop and shop)
I also liked IGA's I have always had good luck with them.

Shaw's Price Chopper and Stop and Shop made the Top Ten list of worst US grocery stores. Publix is the bomb but isn't here.

Out of the way?
C'mon jj, they're both less than 3 miles away from you!

I like Price Rite, there are four of them around me but the brand new one in Cromwell is by far the cleanest and the one I shop at. I've visited all of them.

1. ShopRite: Hands-down, my favorite. Reasonable everyday prices in every department of the store, pretty good sales(with sale items actually in stock), decent produce, decent meat, good prepared food, very good bakery(try the large eclairs, i'm sucking one down right now ), and appropriate checkout staffing levels(no 20 minute waits in the cashier line). I'm still rooting for the BigY here in Stratford to fail, so that it can be replaced by a ShopRite, lol.
2. A&P/Food Emporium: I don't do them often because of location issues. Overall, they're allright. Nothing really ugly as far as price shocks or lousy produce/meat/prepared food/bakery. As Jay mentioned though, A&P seems to be kind of an aimless company that isn't sure if they have a future here, and i kind of sense that when i'm shopping there.
3. Tie: BigY, Stop&Shop: Product quality isn't any less than decent(produce/meats/bakery), generally good or very good actually. And that's all the nice things i have to say about these 2.
4. Shaws: Are they really still in business???

I really love Stop & Shop. Their produce is fantastic. I am still getting sweet blueberries this time of year. Almost always the fruit tastes great. When I did Peapod a couple years ago the produce they brought to us was flawless, like it should be in a magazine ad. The store has almost everything I need, all in one place. No, I do not work for them.
My only complaint is that their health and beauty section is frequently out of certain things like contact solution. Who knows why. It is more expensive than other places, but to me it's worth it to only have to go to one store.
I can't name a worst grocery store. I think they're all decent. Generally Shaw's and Big Y are less likely to have everything I need.
