Check out Shelton! I believe Trumbull, Shelton, and Ansonia are all quite nice, and a good location, and have good schools. The houses are fairly inexpensive considering the area and the school systems, but nothing in CT with great schools has inexpensive housing. Good luck!

Shelton's a nice town but doesn't have a train station. If you're looking to commute on Metro North, I'd suggest Stratford or Milford. If you have a price range we could help out a little more.

Difficult commute
Are you both committed to your jobs? I don't mean to sound negative but that sounds like a tough commute.
I agree with the previous poster that an estimate on how much you want to spend on housing would be very helpful.

It wouldn't be too bad if the OP could afford a town like Fairfield where the commute to either place isn't too difficult.

Shelton's high school is not the best in the area, but most of the lower schools are good. Ansonia ranks 175 out of 180...Trumbull has an excellent school system, though. But not everyone is concerned with school rankings. And I agree, if we know your budget we can work from there. Housing costs vary widely in the area.
Here is just one of several sites that give a few details of the schools:

thanks for the insights. i will look into these towns. we are focused on public schools so the ranking are important, as is quality of life for family with kids. affordability will be important too seeking hms in the $400-500's price range.

You should definitely look into Fairfield. Housing prices have fallen with the economy, and there are several homes in your price range. The schools are very good, and there are a lot of activities for families. In addition to a lot of shopping and restaurants, there is the train station, and beaches on Long Island sound.

I agree, Fairfield hands down. Coming from Bergen you'll see housing prices are a bit lower and homes are on more land (depending on what part of Bergen County you're from).
Fairfield to Naugatuck will be approx. 30 minutes, and the train into GC will take just over an hour. I would suggest a town closer to the city but after Fairfield, they towns become pretty pricey.

Take a look at the Danbury area as well. There are many nice neighborhoods and homes to choose from. Many take the Metro North train from the Brewster, Southeast & Purdy's train stations over in New York (Harlem Line). Good luck!
