I'm going there for a convention next month. What else is there to do in town? Does it have a shopping area?

Does it ever:

The Shoppes at Buckland Hills (http://www.theshoppesatbucklandhills.com/html/index4.asp - broken link)

Welcome to The Promenade Shops at Evergreen Walk

There are also additional shopping plazas in the immediate area.

I concur with what richlee said, but try to get to Cabelas in East Hartford as well. Very cool store if you're into the outdoor stuff and easy to get to from Hartford or the Buckland Shoppes as well. NJ is getting a Cabelas soon too.

I don't know about parks since I don't live up there, but my gf (at the time) and I went shopping at Evergreen a few weeks ago for the first time. I loved it, even though I hate shopping, and we plan to go back in a few weeks. We usually frequent the Woodbury outlets in NY or Clinton Crossing but we found a new place to shop (and go to Johnny Rockets!).

A couple of things I would recommend in Manchester...

Wickham Park would be a nice place to run... Wickham Park News Headlines

Downtown Manchester has a nice small town feel and interesting little shops... Welcome to the Downtown Manchester Special Services District

For a good burger try Corey's Catsup & Mustard in Downtown... Corey's Catsup & Mustard :: Manchester, CT

For a more upscale meal, either Italian or French, try Cavey's, just outside of Downtown... Cavey's Restaurant

Enjoy your visit!

So you know, Manchester is a small city with a core downtown area. On the outskirts of town adjacent to South Windsor is one of the largest shopping districts in the northeast. It is called Buckland Hills and features a mall (The Shoppes at Buckland Hills), a "Lifestyle" Center (Evergreen Walk just over the town line in South Windsor) and a number of medium sized strip centers with most of the major "big box" retailers. There are tons of chain restaurants and a movie theater complex here as well. The only thing really missing in this area is the larger upscale stores like Nordstroms.

As for restaurants to check out while here, in addtion to what Amy recommends, I would recommend Frank Pepe's Pizza on Buckland Hills Drive (it is a branch of the famous 80 year old New Haven pizzaria) and Shady Glen (an old fashioned 1950's ice cream/hamburger place, definitely try a cheese burger).

Manchester has one of the states most extensive bike/running trails in the state. You might google it to see where they are located. Wickham Park is beautiful. It is a small private park on the East Hartford line which you will need to pay a modest fee to enter. There is a small local theater in Manchester that offers several productions each year but for serious cultural activities (Wadsworth Athenium Art Museum, Mark Twain House, Hartford Stage, etc.), Hartford is a short ride away.
