So true. The meteorological calendar for winter is December, January, and February. Meteorological spring arrives March 1st. I just brought 45 kids on their first ski trip this season to Mt. Southington. We always have to cross our fingers that we can get in 4 or 5 trips before spring arrives and the snow disappears.

It can feel that way when you stay inside. But what about going for a nice walk in the cold? After the first five minutes, it feels really great!

I live not that far from you and I actually think it's beautiful here. (But maybe you don't want to hear me say that.)

I was really missing CT until it started snowing up there. I am in North Carolina now and don't know how to act. We have 60 degree weather and I haven't had on a winter coat since leaving CT last March. I have family down here now and they are worried about coming back to all the snow on Sunday.

For those who think that the schools and services in Connecticut are "broken" or "poor", you obviously do not know other states very well. Try dealling with large mega agencies or systems and see how well they work. you will find the CT is much more approachable and user friendly. You get what you pay for. Jay

LOL OMG, it was a 3 inch dusting and I think on the shore it was mostly rain and sleet.

My oh my how will we every survive the clear roads and few inches of snow! I mean, I might be walking down the street, hit a patch of snow, slip and hurt my pinky!

I heard I might even have to PUT ON A JACKET! The horror! I don't know how the folks who live here year round survive.

I'm not sure where your family lives, but it's a mess where I am, with a thick coating of ice over the several inches of snow and ice we already had. I slipped and fell while trying to shovel our driveway over the weekend, and our poor old dog fell twice and had to be helped up the second time. There are trees down all around us from the ice, too. It doesn't look like the ice will melt any time soon either, with the weekly forecast predicting record low temps. Tomorrow is the only day to go above freezing, and our current low temps of teens will drop further down to 0. We're looking at a high of 12 on Friday, we could do with some global warming here! When I was younger I used to love Ct.'s winters, but each year I like it less and less.

That is fair enough however that is saying that CT's education is not broken because California's is more broken. It may be relative, however that doesn't change the fact that CT has a large list of problems. People tend to ignore these because we have some of the highest scores in the country but at the ground level there are a large number of problems that many people don't realize. All they see are some scores posted in a paper and make a judgement based on that.

But is it really the education system that is broken or is it the social system. My sister teaches in an inner city high school and I can tell you that there is nothing you can do about many of the problems these schools face. The problems start at home and no matter how much money is thrown at the schools, it is not going to correct that problem.

I also tend to think that people believe that all schools HAVE to be the same and have to offer the best of everything. While this is a very nice goal, I think it is not realistic. I remember reading a story about a student in New Britain that was upset because the high school there did not offer Latin, yet it was offered in neighboring Farmington. Who says that Latin has to be offered in every school system? I believe that public schools must provide a good basic education (math, English, Science,etc.). Some school systems will offer more, some less. If you want your children to have more, then move to a town that offers more. That may sound harsh but people need to realize that money does not solve everything. JMHO, Jay

I have a friend moving to CT, that's why I'm in these threads. I am in Sacramento, CA right now, and the weather is 60 degrees and clear, but I wanted to comment about you hating the winter weather you are. I know it gets old, I spent a few harsh winters in the Midwest. But there are definitely pros and cons to living somewhere warmer, keep that in mind! I might have nice weather right now, but I also deal with, ridiculously high cost of living, crowded congested highways, long commute times, rude people, bad drivers (people crash around here when it starts to sprinkle rain,) etc.. The grass isn't always greener on the other side! Trust me. I'm leaving CA in the Spring to move back to Midwest where my husband is from. I will trade in these mild winters for the bitter cold, so my children can grow up in a place with a real community of real people. Did I mention that the kids in my neighborhood have to cross busy 6 lane roads (more like highways) on their bikes to get to school everyday? And some schools here are so over crowded that some kids have to take a bus to another town to attend school? Ridiculous. I used to be one of those CA people that said I never wanted to live somewhere snowy and cold. Now that I'm in my 30's and have kids, and see what CA is becoming, I have since changed my mind. Yes, the weather is great around here, but everything else is not. And from what I've heard, Florida isn't all that different from what I've described going on in CA. Same thing applies there. Too many people flocking to nicer weather areas, is causing major problems. You know something is wrong when all the natives are moving away! I just read an article in the LA Times about a higher number of people are moving out of CA than moving in. And most people who are moving out are native Californians. Pretty sad statistics if you ask me. Anyway, sorry to go on a rant, but think long and hard about the good things in your town before you complain about the snow!!!
