Default Teen birth rates - Mississippi has the highest

This is pretty interesting:

Mississippi now has highest teen birth rate - Kids and parenting- msnbc.com

Connecticut has the third lowest at 23.5 per 1000 births. Red states have the highest teen births per 1000.

That's pretty interesting. And the northeast is pretty much liberal compared to the southern states. Just something I found ironic.

I'm sure the data could be sliced and diced a lot of different ways (age, ethnicity, income, education, etc.). But at face value, it's pretty apparent.

We up here seem to automatically hear "teen" and "baby" in the same sentence and think bad. It's not always that way.

It's a different culture in the rural South and for certain ethnic groups.

Having children at 17-18-19 is normal and not like it would be viewed up here as "OMG you just ruined your life - you can't go to college and will be white trash the rest of your life."

Hence this quote from the study:
About 435,000 of the nation’s 4.3 million births in 2006 were to mothers ages 15 through 19....kids in mostly white New England likely would delay child birth, said David Landry, a researcher at the Guttmacher Institute
This report to me, is just something to justify more government funded contraceptives in schools.

As for the liberal vs. conservative "slam". New Mexico was second. Hardly a conservative place.

I think you are seeing more of an influence from rural poor folks and the Latino community, and for the most part to both groups this is normal.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that a higher percentage of students in the suburban Northeastern states go on to higher education, delaying marriage/birth.

Yes being liberal means that abortion is okay.

States with the lowest abortion rates are Rhode Island, Oregon and Maine. All three are very liberal. Rates are highest among blacks, which make up a higher percentage of the population in the southern states.

Why must everything be categorized into democrat versus republican? That propaganda falsely labels states and gives people false and biased information.

Being educated means knowing how to use contraceptives.

Yea it's real hard to take a pill.

For the thread:
Today, CDC's abortion surveillance system remains the sole governmental source of abortion data. The primary responsibility for recording, collecting and managing data rests with the states' vital statistics agencies, which submit data to CDC on a voluntary basis.
Interesting info at least. One could make the case that liberal states would sweep abortion reporting under the rug being "pro choice".
