Based on what you said about being in the country etc but needed to be accessible to Hartford, I would suggest, New Hartford - for sure. It's a touch smaller in the dowtown, but similar and while not the easiest drive it is commutable to Hartford and many people do it.

I don't have too many pics of downtown, but it's really really nice IMO. I almost moved there myself.

At the river looking into Downtown New Hartford:

This is a few miles North of downtown:

Whoever said Collinsville was right on too IMO.

It's just a TV fictional town, where there is lots of activity and foot traffic.

In that sense it is nothing like Washington Depot.

Stars Hollow (from Wikipedia):

In the center of the town is a town square, complete with a gazebo and a statue of Casimir Pulaski. Nearly all of the town's commercial establishments are on the streets surrounding the square, with residential areas beyond. One notable exception is the Dragonfly Inn, which is removed from the common area, tucked away on Third Street [1].

Stars Hollow was inspired by and is loosely based on the real town of Washington Depot, Connecticut (located in the middle of the western half of the state, about 45 minutes from both Hartford and New Haven) which writer Amy Sherman-Palladino once traveled through. Sherman-Palladino later said, "Now, I've never been there in winter, when you're snowed in and you can't go anywhere, and you and your husband want to kill each other because you can't go to a movie. But at the time I was there, it was beautiful, it was magical, and it was feeling of warmth and small-town camaraderie. . . . There was a longing for that in my own life, and I thought -- that's something that I would really love to put out there."[5]
There are many clues given during the course of the show as to its location in Connecticut, but unfortunately no one town fits all clues. Hartford is supposed to be within 30 minutes and New Haven is allegedly 22.8 miles away. Towns mentioned as being close include Woodbury and Beacon Falls (generally in the central south west of the state), Litchfield, Groton and New London (in the south east). This information can't be reconciled any better.

There are a lot of towns in CT that fit this description in every corner of the state.

I guess I missed the part where Washington Depot magically moves near the arctic circle after November.

Wavehunter would have a field day with that quote. lol

njohnson will become famous soon enough
I like visiting these small towns but I could never live in one, especially being so far from anything else. I would probably be sick of the same 10 shops (4 of which are usually antique stores) and 2 restaurants after a week and then be upset that I had to travel 40 minutes to get back to civilization.

This past summer we went kayaking at Lake Waramaug which is close by to Washington Depot in New Preston and drove through Litchfield on the way home. It was not even 5pm and every single place was closed and the downtown was dead, not a single sole walking around. I couldn't help but wonder what people do there after 5pm...

I've noticed that people in these towns (most ruralish towns in CT) arrive home from work, shut their garage door and you don't see them 'til morning. I dunno - I kinda like it. LOL

I second New Hartford, as it is a nice little town, and people are friendly, and it's not too expensive to live in.

Is there a town like this within 30 minutes of Hartford or Wethersfield, particularly?

Thanks for any help. I am determined to find that one small town that so closely resembles the hollywood set.
I may be a day late for a reply but...........we had someone one here a while back (builderbob??) who seemed infatuated with the fact that Washington Depot Ct was the inspiration for the TV town Stars Hollow. The shows creator may have been "inspired" by the town, however the actual town is NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING like the TV program. The city-data member visited the Depot finally, and suddenly he was found in other states forums seeking Stars Hollow. I DO think there are many town that come close to what that TV show seemed to display in Connecticut. However, has anyone ever noticed on the TV show in winter scenes the actors wearing down vest and jackets, but the hardwood trees are still displaying GREEN leaves? Best of luck finding your Stars Hollow. Try downtown New Milford, (the Green area) or maybee the center of Bethel.

Good points. I find it amusing when people think television is real and set out to find what they "created". Hello, it's a movie studio, and the people are acting. lol
