Lolls,

Let me make sure i have this straight: you're a Southerner, now living in Kansas City, who recently took a short drive through Fairfield County and now lurks on the Connecticut board, entitled to inform the rest of the world about the manners of New Englanders, all the while with "lovely manners and graciousness." Do i have that right?

Furthermore, when people who have lived in Connecticut for most/all of their lives beg to differ with you, you retort with subtle insults, professing of course to be "diplomatic and gentle."

Don't you have better things to do?

Based on the in-depth knowledge of Southerners i've gleaned from your posts, I can't wait to start telling the world about the character of those from Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia.....

I have a diplomatic and gentle suggestion for you: why don't you stick to the Kansas City forum?

Well ODH, because one of our children now lives in Connecticut, which means we will be there frequently.

Sorry to disappoint you, but my impressions of Connecticut are based on <insert shocking gasp> actually being in Connecticut.

And I am on this board to get to know it better.

And again, you aren't exactly dispelling the impression of rudeness people get when you tell me my impression of Connecticut as an outsider is not valide as an impression of Connecticut as an outsider because, oh, because I'm an outsider - while also telling me to beat it.

God the charm is overwhelming.

I think Lolls has an agenda

perhaps hates the state for its liberal social attitudes- or perhaps the culture here- or why CT has such a high quality of life. Or perhaps because the people are so smart and motivated to be the wealthiest state in the nation. And even if she has children here- why spread the vitriolic hate? Again is there an agenda- I think so- I really question the motives here and the 'truth' of here allegations 'I have a child there'

Lolls should stay in Kansas- with Senator Brownback- or if in Missouri- with an dunce like Kit Bond.
The rudeness is coming from Kansas

It seems this thread is overrun by liberal tolerance, enlightenment and the milk of human kindness. Considering the title of the thread, and the posse of vultures waiting to turn any criticique of their beloved Connecticut into a personal flame war . . . I think the point is made.

I'm not exactly wondering if the appropriate adjective is rude or reserved. I think that one is obvious.

Enjoy jumping the next person to dare question your superiority or manners, or whatever it is you are proving by attacking everyone here . . .

Note to Sky: I don't hate anyone or hate Conn. I actually came here point out that it is a little different, but I thought it and the people are nice. I won't hold this little virtual clique's idiocy against the entire state, I promise.

Good day all. Bash away. I'm off to have a mature conversation with, well anyone else will up the quality of interpersonal skills after this thread. Good grief, my MAILMAN has more intelligent commentary.

One thing for certain Lolls

I am an average guy- but I know what Connecticut has- and its far superior to your neck of the woods. Arrogance? Please- go and listen to the right wing- I guess I hit it on the head with 'liberal social attitudes' that is the caveat- tolerance? hmmm how about hypocrisy in the heartland- or shall I say 'Flyover country'. Where is Karl Rove when we need him? I guess us east coast elites are not even worth talking to- bashing? And insults? Again from the other side. Glad I am in Connecticut- a very 'civilized state'. Living here in the 'quiet corner' well people are vastly different then Fairfield county- get to realize that even though CT is a tiny state- there are great variations- something you have not picked up on- perhaps you may learn that not everyone in CT acts like the wealthy enclaves in Fairfield county.

Hi Dock,

Our child lives in Fairfield County, in Ridgefield, where we haven't run into any problems. People seem to be as friendly as anywhere else there. The "rude" factor is a subtle thing out and about in New England. I certainly haven't run into anything as psychotic or caustic as the other posters here, but they seem to be the entrenched anonymous "experts" one finds on every message board.

I'm not sure why the OP counts himself among the elite, but based upon the ill bred conduct and despair over not being considered superior, I doubt others who are forced to interact with him would put him in that class. (Then again, his criteria appears to be a gauche guessing game of politics.)

Perhaps "abrupt" is a better word than "rude" for how Southerners perceive New Englanders. I also happen to love New York and New Yorkers, and don't find the abrupt interactions personally rude.

Hi Lolls,

I, too, am confused about the assumption of your political affiliation. For the past two years, I was fortunate to befriend a couple from coastal Mississippi. Of course, I reserved political and religious discussion until I learned more about them. The husband was typical of the 65 percent of Mississippi being RED. However, the wife was as liberal as a Rhode Islander (the most liberal state). By the way, just because Connecticut is a BLUE state doesn't mean that everyone in it is liberal.

She educated me on how only the most conversative opinions in the South make the national news but that the blue minority is strong, albeit outnumbered, in its conviction. She also pointed out that the more liberal tone is where there's more outside influence. Coastal Mississippi is vastly different from interior Mississippi.

Getting to the rude versus reserved discussion, the husband had no issue with Nutmeggers. The wife, though, thought that Nutmeggers were the most impatient, discourteous SOBs imaginable. She refused to refer to here as "home" and couldn't wait to get back to Mississippi. (They moved back last September.)

In the six or so months since they've left, we have remained in contact every single week. One of these days, I'll have to take them up on their offer to come down.

Being an ex-New Yorker, I'm glad that you love New York and New Yorkers! If you ever get the chance, take a drive along Route 17 (soon-to-be I-86). Now that is a beautiful state.

Hi Rich,

We'll have to do that. We have only been up to Connecticut during the harshest months - and without any snow to doll it up. Connecticut in the winter looks like the midwest in the winter. Or anyplace with barren trees and grey skies. It actually looks a LOT like northeastern Kansas. Big older houses (yes, there are houses here that are a couple hundred years old too, can you believe it?) and farmland and neighborhoods with character, etc.

I can't wait to see Connecticut in the spring and summer, and of course, the legendary fall.

We will be driving around a lot and exploring things to do with a youngster - and so we will get to know Connecticut pretty well. At least as tourists And you can't beat it for proximity to other fun metropolitan areas. I have never been to Boston, but if it's only a three hour drive, we'll make it there. New York is just a big magnet. I love, love, love NYC.

So they haven't driven me away. Poor Connecticut! I'll be there soon again.

(As for the politics and religion- if anyone just has to know - I'm a libertarian heathen, which essentially means I think everyone else has too much of both and I'm not very interested in blathering on about either )

Lolls -

You will love CT in the Fall. Just gorgeous. Get to Boston too as it is so much fun although a little hard to get around.

As far as political affiliations go, I am as conservative as they come and cannot wait to get back to CT. Don't think it makes a difference, just treat people as you would want to be treated and all will be well.

Good luck!
