One downside could be that the stretch of 84 through Waterbury is awful, however you aren't on it for very long to get to Southington.
Not sure if it's snobby enough though for you and it's awful close to Waterbury and Naugatuck, god forbid you have to do groceries there or be seen there too... I think Woodbury and Southbury are a little snootier and have a higher Volvo to person ratio, may be an even better bet.

Middlebury is a nice place!! But with that being said it's about a 40 minute commute to Southington everyday, normally it would be closer to 30 but with rush hour traffic on 84 going thru Waterbury it would add on prolly 10 min or so.
A commute to Hartford would be about an hour.
So it all depends on what kind of commute you are looking for.

Middlebury, Southbury, Woodbury snooty? Are you kidding me? They are beautiful towns with good schools and low crime. Yes, maybe on the upscale side but that doesn't make them "snooty".
These are great places to live. If thinking these are nice places to live than by all means call me snooty, too

Thanks all, I guess we'll just have to get out there and take a look.
I think I'm going to miss the northwest if looking for good schools and low crime makes me a snob in Connecticut.

What about I-84 and I-691, both of which go through Cheshire?

If Meriden is the reason that you are passing on Cheshire, then you should also pass on Southington since Southington and Meriden also share a border.

Again, if you have a problem with Meriden, you should pass on Farmington as it shares a border with New Britain.

If you are avoiding bordering ANY towns like new britain. Meriden etc, then likely CT isn't the place for you as many of the nicest towns do border more major urban cities.
Not to mention the only malls in that area are in Waterbury and Meriden...so i hope you never want to go shopping at a mall or you will have to go to those places.
the only reason the snooty comments are being made is because you seem to have that attitude with saying you dont even want to live within a towns reach of meriden... I'm sorry but that's just the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard....I wouldn't want to live in Meriden either, BUT i do go shopping their at the mall sometimes. If you loose that attitude then we wont consider you snooty at all.
So like i said you cant AVOID sharing a border with a less then desireable town in CT, its part of life and it doesnt make that town any less safe.
Sheesh.

Just to clarify, Middlebury is not Regional #13, Middlefield/Durham are Regional #13.
And like others have said, most towns share a border with a city, that doesn't make them bad places.

Ok, I'm sorry if I came across as snotty. I'm simply trying to find a great place for my family. I'm not a snob, heck I lived in the ghetto in Brooklyn for 5yrs. My mom is from Farmington though and I have had some adventures in Meriden that I would like not to repeat, especially with my small children. I don't mind driving there to do shopping once in a while but I was wondering if places like Cheshire and Berlin are too remote that everything has to be done in Meriden, grocery shopping, the post office etc, perhaps all places in Meriden aren't like the evening I had there in the 90s. I'm not sure where you got the idea that I have a problem with New Britain, my cousin lives there and its fine. Let's keep in mind that I live thousands and thousands of miles away and am trying to figure out where to narrow our search down to based on what I can do online. I'm just doing the best I can and hoping to find some people who are kind enough to help me.

Farmington, Cheshire, West Hartford....all nice affluent towns. Meriden is not a good town, but it is pretty concentrated to just Meriden unless the suburban rich kids are looking to buy drugs.
One thing about CT is each town KNOWS where their boundaries are, so spillover from higher crime cities is not too common from what i've seen. People in neighboring towns make sure they don't frequent those areas too mostly, unless there is a big shoppin gcenter there.
